Group of friends with a secial bond, that gives them special power, and are color-coded for the viewer's benefit?
Queen Serenity ruled Crystal Tokyo, a far away kingdom on the moon. Cadence rules the Crystal Empire, a far away kingdom in the Frozen North!

I'd totally be on board with a teenage Flurry Heart travelling back in time, wanting to meet her parents in their younger days, and having learned a time travel spell from her Aunt Twilight, (or perhaps her godfather Sunburst), even in the show.
