Chapter 24 of Sin Whinny Update. Also how I write a story. · 12:01am Apr 12th, 2016
I'm at about 4k words into the chapter, and would normally say that it would be done very soon.
However, things have taken an unexpected turn... so this may take a bit longer.
Let me explain.
When I write a story about ponies, or anyone else for that matter, my process usually goes something like this. First I come up with a story idea, nothing concrete, just an idea I would like to write, maybe I'll have a scene in mind, or the ending, sometimes even less than that to start with. Then after I have my basic idea, I'll decide on who the main characters are that will be in it. And right then and there is where it all really starts. Take Johnny (One Note) Appleseed / Duskwind. When I decided that he was going to be the main character to this story, I spent a lot of time thinking about who he was. What kind of pony he saw himself as. What motivated him. His morals, his fears, his loves, his hates. I did everything I could think of to create a living, thinking personality. Then I took that personality, set him down in the world I made, and followed him around and wrote down what he did. Now that isn't a metaphor for the writing process, it is the literal truth. I built a world, put Johnny in it, and based on the mindset that he had been given, I wrote what he would do in the situations he found himself in. Several times he went far and away from the plot of the story, and I had to come up with things to put into his path to help steer him back on the course I eventually wanted him to go on. For example. Early on he developed an interest in Ori, that was NOT intentional. But, given how Johnny thinks and behaves, that would be exactly what he would end up doing. It would have been unrealistic to write him otherwise.
All the major characters in my stories are given unique personalities when they are introduced into a story. This can be quite the juggling act for me especially in stories like this one and Discord's Family Reunion, when there are a LOT of characters who want to do their own thing. It's something akin to herding cats, or getting twenty random people to agree on pizza toppings.
Anyway I said all that to say this. There is a new character about to be introduced to the story. One whom you are all familiar with, at least in passing. In creating this character's personality, I tried to keep him as close as possible to how he has been portrayed in the past. Then I plunked him down where he was supposed to be, and he managed to get out of control after only two paragraphs.
Now I could just cut him back out of the story, and go a different direction. But, before I consider doing that, I think I want to see where this all goes. Staying true to how HE thinks makes for some very interesting (albeit scary) dialog.
So give me a little while longer on this chapter. This could become very... interesting.
