Self-Deprecation (Story #41) · 7:54pm Apr 9th, 2016
One of the most important things I feel a creative person can do is learn to make fun of themselves. We all do this as a fun hobby in our spare time, and it's great when we can accept that not everything we think of is exactly the best or the most creative idea we've had. I've written plenty of things that aren't great, and I've received suggestions over the years I've taken to improve my writing and give my readers more of the things they've wanted to see in the AU.
In today's short story, Writing Wrongs, I have my character Techorse write a story for Twilight, and it turns out to be absolutely horrible, showing off all the tropes of bad writing we're used to seeing. I hope it's relateable to that moment many of us have had where we make something that doesn't turn out quite as planned.
So, do you think it's important to be able to poke fun at yourself?

Omg yes, it is super important to be able to laugh at yourself. If you're not able to laugh at yourself, you encounter so many problems. One, for example, not being able to handle insults or jokes. If you can't laugh at yourself, and someone makes fun of you or jokes about something about you, chances are you wont take it very well. You'll be insecure.
I can laugh at myself. All the mistakes I make, I laugh at. When someone makes fun of me, sure it hurts, but I can see what's funny and laugh at it too. When someone makes a joke about a quirk that I have, I can laugh at it, because it's funny.
