5 Worst Episodes of Season 5

I hated What About Discord too. My major problem with it is that it was so predictable. Discord has gone through the same moral lessons two or three times now, and they haven't stuck. He's the same irresponsible, selfish troll he's always been, and after so long it makes me question why the cast puts up with him. He's Fluttershy's friend, but he's never been a friend to the rest of them, has shown no interest in getting closer with them, and treats them poorly when he does show up.

The idea of Discord spending time with the Mane Six to bond with them and Twilight being jealous she was left out was a perfectly fine idea. Then Discord does his little leer and sinister voice at the end, and that goes out the window because it's obvious he's up to something. the rest of the episode was painful to sit through as Twi acted increasingly out of character and we got the moronic reveal that Discord was playing a trick on her for no real reason but he was sitting around Canterlot and was bored, I guess, so let's go waste everyone's time for a quick laugh.

And as you say, the episode wasn't funny. And for Discord that's inexcusable.

Also, I dunno if you read the comics, but if don't, check out Friends Forever #20, Discord and Luna. I say that because it's basically the antithesis of this episode - it reveals Discord's biggest fear is that, as a being of chaos and discord, he's incapable of forming long-term, stable relationships with ponies. What he did with Tirek is what he fears he'll always do, inevitably betray his friends and hurt them because it's in his nature. He's unable to reconcile that chaos and evil are not the same thing, and it worries him.

It's also the antithesis of this episode in that it's also very funny and very good.

People liked "what about discord?" ?!?! I don't remember anyone saying anything positive.

Truly, made in manehattan and what about discord were new lows for the series. They fail on premise and execution.

I'm thinking Discord needs to take a break from the series for a while. His shtick is starting to grate which is not something you want to say about a character whose shtick worked so well when he first appeared.

This is why I have my fingers crossed that Trixie will NOT return to the series. I don't want my favorite mare to lose that uniqueness that made her so fascinating.

Good list and thoughts. Half of them fall into that category of "it's not bad, it's boring", probably the worst rating an episode can have. At least with a bad episode, we remember it and can discuss it.

The weird thing is that 'Make New Friends but Keep Discord' was so damn GOOD by comparison for another Discord episode.

Also, I wouldn't mind Trixie coming back. Or Gilda, for that matter. Why? It'd be nice to see them make cameos. Build a little bit on the end of their prior episodes.
