Me, Nate, and Eddie are talking about fishing when Bear shows up looking like he's on his way to the gallows. Turns out he managed to lose his mom's engagement ring while trying to use it as fish bait, and his dad is super mad. Also, he heard his mom talking about leaving! He thinks he's caused his parents to split up by losing the ring!
Good grief...
There may be a way we can help him, though. I've been reading up on Youkai lately, and I read about one called a kappa. It lives in the river and can swim, so it'd be good for finding a lost ring in the pond, right?
Of course, there's all kinds of things people around town want help with, and Bear's kind of a dink, so I decide to wander around helping not-dinks with their not-dink problems first.
...wow, maybe I'm a dink.
Anyway, once I'm done dinking around all over town, I decide to head to the riverbank, where I hear two housewives talking about a flying plate. Whisper says that when kappa get weak, sometimes they can't vanish all the way, and people can see the bald spot on their heads that looks like a shiny plate. Welp, that seems to be what happened here. Searching around the riverbank, we find Walkappa. Walkappa is weak and tired, and desperately wants fish. He keeps going on and on about how hungry he is, how much he wants fish, and how he'll do anything for anyone who can catch him some fish.
Wow, I get the feeling Walkappa really wants some fish.
...don't kappa eat cucumbers?
Anyway, Walkappa gives me a fishing rod and orders three freshly-caught Carp.
If he...already had the fishing rod, why didn't he just...?
You know...nevermind. Anyway, I catch some carp for Walkappa, and in gratitude, he gives me his Youkai Medal! Now I can look for Bear's mom's ring.
I head over to the catfish pond, and Walkappa starts swimming around looking for the ring. Just as he finds it, this huge pirate ship-looking Youkai pops up out of the water, all mad and shouting!
After a battle, the big loud Youkai explains that splashing around in the pond scares away all the fish, so that's why he gets mad when people (or Youkai) do it. Walkappa apologies, and the King of the Pond warns us to behave and respect the pond, then disappears.
Anyway, we got the ring back, and now Bear wants me to go to his place with him when he apologizes to his mom. ...sure, why not.
At Bear's house, we hear Bear's mom telling his dad about what he'll need to know, a list of chores and numbers, all that. Long story short, everything was a misunderstanding: the ring Bear lost was NOT his mom's engagement ring, but a cheap old gashapon ring, and she isn't leaving them, she's just going to her class reunion over the weekend.
Wow. All that for nothing.
Oh well, at least I made a new Youkai friend and got a fishing rod! Yaaaaay.
