Changelings.
Since their first appearance in the show I liked them. I mean, whats not to like about them? Little black hoovsies, green soulless eyes and the cutest little wings. OK, you got me. I don't like them because they are the cutest thing ever, I like them as a race. They are like Celestia and Luna: Without an origin story, shrouded in mystery and open for everything an author can imagine.
But as a hobby scientist, I had to ask myself, how could such a species have evolved? Do I go the Stargate Atlantis way and say they evolved from simple Bugs that mixed their DNA with that of their prey? Or do I go the way most people go and say: "MAGIC!"
I decided to do neither. So I gathered everything I new about Changelings from the show:
- They suck love
- They can change into ponies
- uhmmmm...
- yeah...
- awkward...
OK, so they feed on love. Because I'm neither a 4 year old girl or a pink Alicorn, that was not enough for me. Thus, they fed from emotions, and love is the chocolate. Because I couldn't imagine an evolutionary background that made a lick of sense, they didn't get one. As mentioned in the story, the Alicorns created the Changelings, or to be more precise, the first Changeling. Echidna was created to be the perfect soldier and spy. Able do raise an army on her own (with the little help of a maybe willing mate). Feeling and feeding on the emotions of her enemies, to fly and to cast magic.
And as we know, there are only a few Alicorns left in Journey. But that is not Echidnas fault. After all, wasn't she even friends with Luna and Celestia? Both stated as much. Would they be friends if she had destroyed the Alicorns?
The story behind the Alicorns and the Changelings is deeply connected to the main story of Journey. Everything is connected. I said as much already. Celestias hate for Humans, Auralia, Thiemo going to Albion, everything.
That remains to be seen.
