Deus Ex: Mankind Divided pushed back · 7:10pm Nov 18th, 2015

From February 23, all the way too October 23 nonetheless. (!)

“As you may have already seen by reading and watching the many previews for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, our aim is for it to be a worthy successor to Human Revolution, and to improve upon that game in every way possible. I know that expectations are extremely high, and we not only want to meet those expectations, but exceed them. We’re confident and proud of the game so far. However, as we are now playing through the game in full we can see that it will require more time in post-production for tuning, iterations, and refinement to meet our high standards. In order to achieve this, we need to move the release of the game to August 23rd, 2016.”

I hereby present my would-be translation from Corporate, to Consumer on what I think happened at Square-Enix for them to cough up enough dough to let Eidos Montreal polish the game for six more months:

Did you hear?! The new Batman game screwed the pooch so hard, even the PC pirates wouldn't play it! And now Steam is offering refunds! REFUNDS! Quick! Re-hire the quality assurance department before the fifth money-bin starts emptying!!

Semi-cruel jokes and cyborg bad-ass withdrawal already setting in aside, I guess long term this will be for the best. I love Human Revolution to itty-bitty bits, but at least the DC version still has some rather nasty bugs in it there's really no excuse for this long after release.

So bitter-sweet news, I guess. :applecry:

So, out of curiosity, what did you think of Human Revolution? As a game, I mean. I played the original Deus Ex when it was new and the thing about it that stuck to me the most, certainly substantially more than any plot it had, was the gameplay. It was fun, varied and interesting. Most of all, though, it felt alive.

This is something I very much missed about Human Revolution. The entire thing just felt dead and sterile to me, compared to other open world games of the period. Like someone spent so much time thinking about the story it should have, they didn't have any time left to actually make the world feel alive. Under the bottom line, I straight-out didn't enjoy it. I never got past the second mission hub.

You know, that's actually a really interesting question. I've been singing praises for it enough times, so I can see why you'd ask that.

Think I'm feeling a bit too under the weather to answer that right now, and it probably be more blog length anyway, but I'll keep the question in mind for a slow day.

Well, if you're sick right now, that's certainly all the response I can reasonably ask for. Feel free to tell my your Skype name if you have one, by the way. I have recently been bugged into making one for myself and you are one of the few people I wouldn't mind talking to on a regular basis, if it's an option.
