Monday X: The Hooffields and McColts · 6:32pm Nov 17th, 2015

Another Monday blogpost, coming to you on a Tuesday. This time we're looking at episode 23: "The Hooffields and McColts."

**SPOILERS**
If you've seen the episode and are interested in my words then read after the break, otherwise just move along or come back later.

We get another Fluttershy episode, this time as she has a relaxed time reading a storybook with all of her animal friends. Yup, nothing exciting happening thi-

... Oh... OH.

Ok, so it's nothing like that at all.

Fluttershy's forced to postpone her story time ( :fluttershysad: ) to head out to Twilight's castle for her frienship mission. When she gets there we find out Twilight got called upon as well, at last.

And somehow in the course of five minutes she's already managed to fill the meeting room with books and charts, packed their saddlebags (with books), and planned for most any friendship problem she can think of.

The map sends them out to the Smokey Mountains, a place one of Twilight's books illustrates to be lucious and beautiful. They decide to take a hot-air balloon up, and during this trip Twilight pretty much obsesses over what types of problems she might face, mostly recounting ones we've seen in previous episodes. Somehow I doudt it's going to be any of those but let's keep going.

They finally get there...

... and there goes the books. RIP books.

The first ponies we meet are the Hooffields. They claim to be angry because the McColts destroyed their farmhouse, with a pebble. Eeyup. So now they're getting revenge by firing pumpkins at them. Eeyup.

Wait, where did that come from? We literally just saw the books get murdered by a rogue pumpkin. ...I guess it's just that one that survived.

So Twilight checks her notes for a way to help them.

Oh look, an underlying theme of Fluttershy helping the animals. That's so cute, the mice even have their own little pumkin house, ala smurf.

The Hooffields agree to hold off on the pumkin barrage whilst Twilight and Fluttershy go and talk to the McColts to find out their side of the story.

So now Big Pa McColt reveals that they only did it because the Hooffields broke their wagon, thus ruining all their food. Yeah, I see where this is going.

And the McColts, though good builders, can't farm to save their lives, litterally. Lucky for them the Hooffields are providing a steady supply of pumpkins, and later tomatoes, for them to eat.

I honestly see no problems here. I'd rather like to have some pumpkin quesadillas [1]. :ajsmug:

Obligatory fluttercute.

At this point we pretty much get the idea. We have one family who can farm but can't build, and the other that can build but can't farm. It would be nice if they could work together, if only they didn't hate each other so much.

So Twilight decides to make a little announcement to both families, asking them kindly to stop fighting. It's actually a really good speach, and one she didn't have to spend hours preparing at that. (although, knowing her, she probably had it already drafted in that first five minutes back at the castle).

Twilight's confident that it worked, and going so far as to suggest they leave. Fluttershy points out that their butts cutiemarks aren't glowing. Twilight, still confident in her actions, states they should start any moment, and we're followed by a short awkward silence as they wait.

Instead of them glowing we get the aforementioned bombardment of tomatoes. Sorry Twilight, if the other missions are anything to go on you're going to have to try a little harder than that.

Also I thought the McColts didn't have any food?

And Twilight tears out the page for that solution, way to respect the book, Twilight. Also where did that page go?

Another Fluttercute moment. Yes, shove that turtle to safety.

Twilight's next plan is to find the root of the problem. A good plan, a pity neither of the families know what started it in the first place. After this we're faced with a montage of them going back and forth asking question of each family, and obviously getting nowhere.

Their next plan is to get somepony to apologise. Which seems to be going well.

Look, they even brought a cake. inb4 trojan horse-s

Another obligatory Fluttercute.

Told ya

Aand yea, they obviously weren't listening at all.

This all pretty much degrades into a full on war with both families fighting in the valley leaving Twilight and Fluttershy back at square one.

No serously, where are those things going? Is Twilight going to get home to a pile of papers just blocking the door or something?

So whilst Twilight is moping Fluttershy does her thing and all the animals come out of hiding to hang out with her. It's then that Fluttershy and Twilight discover that the animals are all starving and have no homes, and they tell Fluttershy what happened [2].

Oh hey, we get to see that spell again. Yay for back-referencing and continuity. :yay:

And now, with her newfound captive audience, Fluttershy goes on to explain what happened to start the feud. Interestingly enough it all began when their ancestors arriving as friends, and discovering the then beautiful valley. They both decided to make a home there and protect it, except they couldn't agree on what to do first.

Long story short their fighting was destroying the very thing they were fighting for. So true. And now their descendent carry on the fight without even knowing how it began in the first place.

Knowing this the McColts and Hooffields decide to bury the axe and form a truce, in the interest of the valley. And they lived happily every after.

I have never asked so many questions in a single blogpost before. So yeah, fun.

That was the "Hooffields and McColts". If anyone wants to share their thought about the episode then feel free to leave me a comment bellow.

[1] By the way it's pronounced Kay-sa-dee-ah.
[2] I say Fluttershy because no one else here speaks squirrel.

Might as well at this rate. :pinkiecrazy:

I'd like to keep them consistent but if they turn up on another day I'll might as well change them to reflect that.
