There is prevailing wisdom on this site that the easiest way to get into the featured box on the front page is to write clop.
However, this ignores the fact that fimfiction effectively has two featured boxes. One is displayed if your settings make M-rated stories visible. The other is displayed otherwise. Here are a couple of screenshots I took a little while ago showing the two featured boxes:

The second featured box is harder to get into simply because there are more stories you're competing against. For the stories that appear in both, you'll see they're higher up in the first box.
So yeah, if you want to get featured, you might be better off avoiding an M-rating and going with something like romantic fluff, or click-bait random comedy.
There was a blog post awhile back from someone else about ideal times for uploading fics or fic chapters as well. Turns out the best day and time is Sunday afternoon based on site traffic as well as number of uploads there usually are (and wouldn't ya know it, my fic finally got featured when I followed that advice with my last two chapters).

Great advice! I didn't know there were so many M-rated stories up there though...I'm sure most people have no filter on their account, too.

3550214 Ah, I see. Well thanks for the tips. One other question: Is there a way to tell if your story got featured or thrown into the popular story list? Does the site notify you or do you have to discover it by chance?

You can also take advantage of that by adding "&bookshelf=1" to the query string of certain searches. Like this:
