    Happy Holidays

This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

Last Week on City Of Doors 7/7/2019

So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Anime: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Michael Bay Presents: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Revenge of the Unicorn God Slayer by Cold in Gardez

Another one I read out loud. I found this hilarious. I suspect my mother (who has never seen a Michael Bay movie) wasn’t as amused. She still liked it, but she was totally missing the deeper comedy. I had thought I had written this up, but apparently didn’t. Hopefully I didn’t do it, post it, then forget about it. Anyway, this was fun. Part of me wishes there was more, but the other part knows that there really wasn’t anywhere else to go. There is only so much you can get out of the source material after all. The non-pony source material that is.

In the Garden of Good and Evil by Cold in Gardez
[story link] [my original review]

I didn’t finish Romance Reports when I gave it a try. Just seemed a bit, well, not my thing. Might give it another chance if what I saw at the start of that story ends up with Twilight Sparkle thinking about Luna as ‘the crazy moon bitch’. If that’s the case, it’s more interesting than what I managed to get through. As for this story, interesting. Not sure I’d say I liked it. Was far too slow paced for my tastes. The writing was good, but in general not really grabbing me. The ceremony itself was interesting, but in my head is pretty much compressed to a sentence or two. The very end was interesting, but much too short. A story where Twilight Sparkle struggles with the implications and her angry feelings about the end of the ceremony would be a lot more interesting to me. I do have to wonder if that last line is referencing something specific, or just a dangling hook to grab the reader’s interest.

Forever Summer by Cold in Gardez

A good story. Little basic, but quite good. I suspect this would have grabbed me a bit more if I wasn’t a little odd. I never really was that kind of kid when I was younger. Very imaginative, as I still am today, but even as a young kid I was fairly logical and introspective. So I never really got lost in play like that. Even when playing pretend with other kids (mostly megaman themed pretend games, actually) I always was aware that it was just pretend. Probably doesn’t help that I’ve never really had peers. Up through high school I hung around kids younger than me or older than me, or my parents and their friends. I don’t think I’ve ever actually had a friend that was the same age as me +/- 1 year.

Half-Baked by Aquaman
[story link] [my original review]

Fun and predictable. Another one for the fluffy comedy pile. The first page or so was my favorite but that’s because I really enjoy the dialogue-focused sort of style. It’s almost all dialogue, but I think there are a few bits of body language and non-dialogue like sighing.

The Dread Chitin by Karazor
[story link] [my original review]

I ended up liking this one. A little light in the content department. I like my stories fairly dense after all. Still, quite good. Kind of wish it had been more of a Mechwarrior crossover as I have liked the few bits of that universe and wanted to see more of it. I suspect I’ve gotten a bit spoiled with the Fallout and XCOM crossovers that I’ve enjoyed so much. This story actually reminded me of the XCOM crossover (Stardust by Arad) in places. Also had a pretty good version of Rainbow Dash, and a nice little exploration of pony and human views on violence. Though I viewed it as Twilight Sparkle being basically an ivory tower intellectual rather than a look at ponies as a whole. There is no way that a kingdom with a royal guard as big as we saw in the wedding episodes doesn’t have at least some experience with ‘proper’ violence.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback.
