Strange Observation - Bland Titles · 6:45pm Oct 8th, 2015
Okay, not to impede on the creativity of the writers on this website, as most of you are quite talented and deserve to be here. I just can't help but notice that there seems to be a lot of repetition in fanfic titles, and given that the title is what's supposed to draw someone in, cover art notwithstanding, that can be a problem. I don't intend on pointing out any specific fics, so don't take offense if you have written or are a fan of a fic with these names.
- Of X and Y
- Chronicles/Diaries/Stories of a/an X
- Vague title referring to the trait of a character or concept
- An old phrase you could hear in casual conversation
- Abstract adjective (Incandescence, Effervescence, Death, Princesshood)
Honestly, this is probably one of the many things in the world that bothers such a small amount of people that it's really not worth complaining about. I just want to encourage you dearies to make your fic titles as awesome as your stories. Make the title represent the crux of the fic; the most important aspect of the narrative.
Anyway, that ends this short rant. Sorry for bothering you guys.
Oh, and I uploaded the latest chapter of The Elder Scrolls: Equestria.
You forgot "(character) (verb) (prepositional phrase)". That's a common one.
My favourite have to be pun titles; those are great if they keep at it the whole story.
oh, almost forgot (video game):(noun)
I simultaneously take offense and shrug my shoulders at it, because as much as I hate overused titles like that, often I can't think of anything better than myself.
Titles are hard, summing up 100,000 words in a phrase normally limited to about 5 words.
I personally don't find titles too hard.
Just think of something that describes the story, bonus if it's witty or humorous or what have you to fit it's particular genre. In the end it's really only there to assign a name, and to pull people in. I care more about the story itself than the title.
I definitely agree with you. I usually try to go with alliteration myself or a play on words while still trying to convey what the fic is about.
