YOLO (And I get around to talking about Relationships and Mark) · 3:08am Aug 31st, 2015

I updated Utter. Go yell at me in the comments.

I am a proud member of the fandom. Not this fandom but The Fandom. The Fanfiction Fandom to be precise. That means I read more fanfiction of a show than I actually watch, supposing I ever got around to watching it in the first place. Basically, I treat fanfics more like original pieces of fiction without giving a care about the source material.

That being said, I don't care about the characters, I care about the CHARACTERS. I got a thing about dynamics, personality types and any magic dust that makes me snort up chapters faster than I can say Junjo Romantica .

As the wise anime His and Her Circumstances has taught me, CHARACTERS come together, grow, then part.

You can mix-match circumstances and dynamics but a lot of fictional relationships (whether romantic or not) follow that pattern. It's like a perfect equation. The pattern plays itself out in the little things; eating together, confessing troubles to the bigger things; admitting secrets, growing as person. It's both metaphorical and literal in how it proceeds. As the author, only I know the innate things I wish to convey on the page and as an author, I'm probably bad at it.

My whole Mark and Princess Celestia stiche comes from the fact that I chose a dynamic (Princess/Godly Entity X Mortal Man), defined their personality types (Cool X Warm-blooded) and left them with a vague scenario to see if they would gravitate to each other.

And holy crap sauce, it worked.

Here's some information about Mark you might want to know. I've grown to dislike both the 'You're the only one to treat me like a real mare' cliche with Celestia and the other one 'Heheh, you have a sun on your butt, Sunbutt.' But I was kinda worried that their story would stall if Mark, as the human and viewpoint, wasn't trying to 'seduce' the princess without picking a path. But my version of Celestia stepped up to the bat, determining the rules of their relationship and aggressively taking the main role. And Mark liked it, following her lead only to subvert her later down the line.

I created Mark to be the sort of character to be compatible with that version of Celestia without relying on those older tropes that comes with writing Celestia X Human situations. There's an air of sexual warfare around them because I wanted to cut through the early relationship blushing and stuttering. And has it worked out for me, reading base wise? I don't know yet.

With Utter, I flipped their personalities but kept the same dynamic. And added more Motherly and circumstantial guilt just in-case it wasn't MOTHERLY ENOUGH. Princess Celestia hasn't made her full debut in the fic yet but I'm sure you'll see what I mean when you see her.

It just surprised me how compatible Mark was with Shade of Celestia. Maybe Mark has a thing for dominating mares.

And I think that requires a fic to test that idea!

But what do you guys think about relationships, Celestia dynamics, or anything else about characters?

I've only ever watched a few episodes of MLP but I spend a good amount of time on this website. Honestly, I couldn't care less about the source material. But I do love the fics.

I know how that feels. The first real fimfiction fic I read was Wanderer's D, The Empty Room which floored me because I couldn't believe that pony show I only watched while waiting for Dan Vs could be so good. I went to watch it again... and it turned out the same as I remembered. Something to put on while I waited for Dan Vs!

I love fanfics. They make a show better then it actually is.
