Story audio readings, anyone? · 11:26am Aug 28th, 2015

God, I miss when I still got excited for this show.

I haven't made a secret of the fact that Monsters is highly likely to be my last fanfic on the site. Perhaps my last fanfic ever, period. It's been fun, guys and girls and variation thereof, but there always comes a time when one must move on.

With that in mind, though, I started wondering about my "legacy" here, for lack of a better word. I've written some good fics -- or so I've been told -- and Night Shift even received some pretty amazing fanart over the years. There's one aspect of the "fanfiction subfandom" that I've always ignored, though, and that is audio readings. Audio books. Reading fics out loud. You know what I'm talking about. I've only had one of my fanfics "audio read" so far, which to the surprise of nobody was Night Shift.

Now I'm wondering if there are more souls out there who'd do readings of my other stories. If you know a guy who knows a guy, now's a good time to speak up. I've snooped around a bit in that one group, but most readers there seem either inactive or unwilling to do "grimdark" stuff. Seeing as my portfolio consists largely of things tagged [gore] and [dark], that poses a problem. There's also the fact that my better fics are all pretty long multichapter ones (save for Queen of Queens which was a rare successful oneshot).

At the end of the day, you can call this simple literaly self-indulgence: it'd be nice to hear my own words spoken, and since a lot of other people also seem to have liked my words, I bet they'd liked to hear them spoken as well. You can't blame a man for being proud of his work and wanting to shove it into people's faces show it around a bit, can you?

So, bottom line: does anyone know anyone who'd be willing to devote their time and effort to creating audio readings for some of my fics? Worst case, the answer is no, in which case oh well. Best case, something really cool might come of this.

You know, I'm actually tempted to give it a shot, just to see if I could. I've been said to be good at poetry readings. I just don't know how.

Oh, that'd be pretty cool. Given that you were my long-time beta reader, might one call it poetic, even? Har har. As for how, I imagine you need a good microphone and a lot of time.

Heck, I actually considered doing a few readings myself (not just for my fics), but I don't have the equipment for it and with my accent it might even be considered a human rights violation, so I decided not to.

Well, I've got a gaming headset and I've messed around in Audacity enough to have no idea what I'm doing. But hey, if thirteen-year-olds on Youtube can do it, how hard can it be? If I can expand my talents, perhaps it's worth looking into.

I mean, not immediately, since I'm moving house tomorrow. But sometime.

not immediately

How dare you make me wait. I'll just do my own readings. With blackjack. And hookers!

I thought QoQ had a reading. o.O Well, I guess I'll find out for sure this weekend...

Does it? I don't know about it! I remember making a request to somebody, and he said he'd do it, but also warned me it'd take a while. And that was... well, I can't even remember when it was, it's been so long and I haven't heard a word since. I just checked, and apparently he hasn't even been online in over 7 weeks. So... yeah. No reading (yet?) as far as I'm aware.

Hmm.

Well, I've earmarked I Feel Fantastic! for a later date, cuz it's short and I need shorty shorts to read. :B

Nice. I didn't actually know you do readings. As for I Feel Fantastic, well, that... that is a weird one. Wrote it in like an hour or something on a whim. Have fun, I guess.

Sounds right up my alley! :V

And the imagined reading of QoQ was apparently all in my head. :B I may have to see if I can do something about that...

Well, seems I needn't apply. Not like I'd do any better than anyone else: my voice is about as plain and unremarkable as it could possibly be.

High winds and calm seas, Jawjoe. Maybe we'll cross paths again, on some distant shore, in some distant time. I wouldn't bet on it, though.
