I now learned why people hate Sword Art Online · 5:58am Aug 28th, 2015

[10:53:09 PM] KittyKat Noote: and now i just learn why people hate sword art online
[10:53:42 PM] KittyKat Noote: "You go from strong empowered female character to LITERAL tentacle attack!"
[10:55:12 PM] marikazemus34: It goes from "Compelling situation that shows what people can really become in a life-or-death situation..."
[10:55:36 PM] marikazemus34: to "I'M A GAMER WHO GETS ALL THE CHICKS EVEN THOUGH I'M SUPPOSEDLY ANTISOCIAL AND AWKWARD ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR!"
[10:56:06 PM | Edited 10:56:16 PM] KittyKat Noote: i am now MAD that people asked me if SAO was what inspired me to write Equestrian Earth

The show has some HORRENDOUS flaws. But I still like it for some reason, despite that.

I wouldn't even begin compare 'Equestrian Earth' to that idle sack of trash, really... at least EQE has character development, and the characters therein aren't ridiculously Over-powered...

There's just something about how few people have tried the VR premise and done it well. The most universally-accepted example is The Matrix, though it isn't so much tied to Video Gaming as SAO or EqE is. I like the idea of VR gaming, and I was into SAO for a while. I also kinda agree with the overarching conclusion people have come to though. It started off good. It was even OK some of the way into the ALFheim arc. But it flatlined pretty spectacularly.

Don't take offense by SAO comparisons to Equestrian Earth, because they exist. Also don't take offense to the idea that it might have been an inspiration- because someone was inspired by the 80's My Little Pony franchise, and all she wanted to do was do it right.

3352667 EQE?

3352662 I'd say it's the world building in season 1.

Marik's thoughts on it, which surprises me that you two refer to it.
[11:00:51 PM] marikazemus34: All SAO inspired me to do is write compelling characters to fill the void it left.
[11:00:57 PM] marikazemus34: It's Cocktease the Anime.
[11:01:04 PM] marikazemus34: It's the anime equivalent of The Matrix.

But yeah I won't try to be too salty about comparisons to SAO. If anything, I'll take Marik's view on life and try to make things better.

3352701 EQE= Equestrian Earth

really as far as Animes about people getting stuck in MMOs go, I would recommend .hack//sign or Log Horizon, I felt they did the setting a lot better, Log Horizon's author actually played Everquest for years and it very much shows by all the different types of characters in it

What this guy said. The best recent anime I've seen that does the video game premise well is definitely Log Horizon.

3352711 Oh cool! I was just talking with my friend on how potentially cool Equestrian Earth has a shorted nickname now. I've been calling it EEMMORPG for like since I started the story.:rainbowlaugh:
But EqE is much more easier to type.

3352715 3352747 Log Horizon is on my list of animes to watch.

That whole "hate on SAO" thing is getting old and tiresome... If you don't like it then don't fucking watch it. It's no different from the anti-bronies or whatever. Everything has flaws, even the price-winning Blockbuster movies. If you think the flaws of SAO are too big to ignore, then don't watch it. End of story. It's not even because the flaws are presented in a proper fashion (some comments here, for example).

If people want to critique something, do it properly or not at all. The random insults don't make people look "smart" for not liking a show. It makes them look like rabid fanboys of some other thing who hates the given show because it's not the subject of their fanboy-ing.

I apologize about the small rant, but I have had my fill of SAO hate over the years. If people want to critique the show in a proper fashion then I am willing to listen. Doesn't mean I'll stop liking the show, but I'll at least be open to hear why someone else doesn't like it. Comments like Teslakana's for example? That's the thing that annoys me.

Again, apologies for the rant, but I think it needed to be said.

3352915 Well don't waste your words on me. Honestly I don't really give two shits about SAO. I stopped watching it after episode 16 for no reason other than I didn't want to watch another episode cause I'm lazy like that. I've only been curious as to why there's SAO hate but I never really wanted to dedicate time to Google search it (again another example of my laziness). It's only thanks to my love for the Super Best Friends that I happened to learn about ONE aspect of SAO that most people probably hate. Skip to 4:35 for the moment I learned that one particular part of SAO.
And honestly, it's a pet peeve of mine about seeing strong characters get degraded by tentacles in a sexual fashion. Forbid they be female characters cause that's just the whip cream icing on the god damn pies of lies. So knowing SAO did that... well it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not enough to get me truly salty, but only disappointed.

But to sum up my feelings about SAO, I don't personally care about the anime but learning about it made me not want to care about it anymore. My words up there from Skype are just said to be silly. For example:

I respect your opinion, but it wasn't you I was directing my comment at. It was just in general, to the SAO haters (the ones who actually hate or and bash it every time to topic comes up. You didn't do that, only expressing your dislike). It was some of the comments and the general idea how it seems "Cool" to hate SAO, that made me a bit annoyed.

If people don't like it, fair enough. But the fact that those who don't like it seem compelled to bash it... that's the thing that makes me want to slap myself. It's petty, if anything. You didn't really do either, just saying why you understand people dislike it. That's something I can deal with, and respect. But when it comes to feeling like they have to bash it... that's when it all goes wrong, I think.

So... yeah. Don't think I'm bunching you with those guys. I was just letting out a bit of steam

3352942 Alright that's understandable, but I guess I'm sorry for bringing the subject up. It's just that recently someone asked me again about the story's relation to SAO and I was reminded of previous times people asked me the same question, so when I learned about this hours later it all just, I guess, full circle or something.

3353532
Ah. Well, the only thing I'd say it has in common is the Virtual Reality part. Everything else is different, really.

3352915 The response "don't like, don't watch/read/whatever" honestly just seems like a way to lazily deflect unwanted negative criticism to me. You have to watch a show before you know whether you like it or not; you can stop watching it, but you can't go back and unwatch the parts you saw.

To keep this slightly on topic, I'll just mention that I feel like SAO could have been so, so much better than it was, but I really got the impression that the author lost interest in the overarching concept, and instead of seeing it through, just dumped an easy way out onto the protagonists so the story could move on to their next momentary fascination.

3355035 that's where log horizon comes in, the great mmo anime.

3355035
It's not that I wanted to deflect criticism of SAO. If it is legitimate and delivered in a proper way (I.E not as a bunch of base insults, how it's trash, etc etc., but talked about objectively, like "This is a flaw for this reason, and so is this." No insults.) then I am willing to listen. If there is anyone who's willing to take the time to not be a child and properly critique the anime, then I would be more than willing to listen.

When I say "Don't like it, don't watch it," I'm directing it at people who shout base insults and act like children, bashing the anime because it's "cool," rather than actually being, well, mature and just simply explain what they don't like. Again, in a calm fashion.

It's a pretty bad anime, one of its biggest sins was making death matter. Part of the fun of an mmo is death not really mattering or at least not being permanent, there is no reason to set a game in an mmo if your characters cant die. If you want one that does the trapped in an mmo thing right, watch Log Horizon.
