The Dark Crystal β€” My Thoughts · 5:11pm Aug 20th, 2015

I have no idea what just happened, but it was a very pretty one and a half hour mind-fuck. :applejackconfused:

Reminded me a bit of Krull, if any of you remember that old fantasy chest-nut. Glorious effects, beautiful visuals, a strikingly original world... but if you as much as tap the actual story and characters with a metaphorical spoon you hear a hollow thunk.

...And that's about it. Glad I saw it once for the effects, but i'll doubt I'll ever re-watch it. Just far too much looks compared to actual substance.

And I've never really been scared of puppets, so not even the fabled nightmare fuel aspect did much for me in that regard. Whatever those turkey-wizards wee called just felt more goofy to me than outright scary. Wonderfully original design, though.

It is worth that one look, through. Crowning achievement in practical effects with some glorious art-direction that still holds up, the plot and story were simply too basic 'good vs evil due to prophecy' for my tastes.

So I do actually recommend it. Just more on the technical aspects than the actual movie itself.

I will give it this, though: The Dark Crystal is the best use of the trope Balance Between Good and Evil I've seen, and one of the few times I've seen that particular idea done well. It actually makes sense why the good-wizard-monsters won't β€”or outright can't fight the evil-wizard-monsters by the end instead of the normally half-hearted shrug of disinterest when you ask why good and evil need to exist in balance, and I'll freely applaud one of my least liked concepts actually done well for once.

Jim hensons workshop was in good form back then.

Oh, yeah, the whole movie is a technical and visual marvel. You really feel like you're peering into some strange, fascinating world. I hope I made that clear.

Just a pity half the dialogue is nonsense-words, and most of the story is so basic.

I have a feeling I would have loved it as a kid, though. I've always had a fondness for Grimm style tales with an edge to them, but there was just a bit too little flesh on the metaphorical bones for grown-up me story-wise,
