The Reconciliation of the Changelings, which took place under the pressure of the Shadow Wars of YOH 1500-24, and was largely due to the efforts of beings such as Fluttershy Wind, Landscape Carrot, Rarity Belle and Changeling Queens such as Carrot, Vespid, Compound and Hidden Valley, was the turning point for the Changelings as a Kind. Previously, they had dwelt in the darkness and fled the lights of advancing Pony civilization, obtaining Love and all other things they needed through scavenging, deceit and betrayal. This was a path which would have led to their ultimate extermination or banishment by an increasingly-powerful Ponykind.
Instead, the Changelings turned to an open symbiosis with Ponies. Friendly Changeling Warriors fought side by side with the Equestrian Guards against the hordes of High Queen Hunger. The productivity of Changeling Workers, constructing machines to the specifications provided by the Paradise Entity, helped bring victory in the Shadow Wars. And after the war, the Changelings provided ideal to work both in the service industries and help spearhead interplanetary colonization.
Able to breed new subcastes with ease or Shift into temporary forms as needed, the Changelings proved very capable colonists. At the same time, the tendency of Changelings to be extremely nice toward the members of other Kinds -- both because this was encouraged by the Reconciliation, and because it generated positive affect in return -- made the Changelings a popular group on the new worlds. Both competent and well-liked, therefore, the Changelings established Hives on many planets in the centuries to come.
Thousands of years later, the Changelings are an accepted and honored part of intergalactic civilization. Their dominant philosophy extends eusociality beyond their own species to all sapient life, and potentially to everything in the Universe capable of supporting sapience and enlightened cooperation. They believe that by extending felt-love to all other creatures, they spark a return of both felt-love and food-love, in a virtuous circle that enhances all involved.
They exist in an especially close mutuality with the New Flutter Ponies, a race formed by combining the atavistic genetic heritage of the Flutter Ponies found in the Changelings and that surviving in the other Pony Kinds, thus circumventing Discord's ancient (and literally irrevoccable, as he has forgotten how he did it the first time) Twisting of the Flutter Ponies. The Changelings tend the other sapient species and attempt to promote Love and Harmony among them, while the Flutter Ponies do the same with the non-sapient ecosystems.
The titular head of the Coalescence is High Queen Kindness, Fluttershy Wind, but she exercises only a distant leadership of her lings, attending major conferences and otherwise leaving the Changelings to govern themselves. Since adopting The Harmony, this has worked fairly well, leaving Fluttershy to her eternal project of bioforming the Universe, spreading ecosystems everywhere. In practice, the Hives are semi-autonomous city states on whatever worlds they are located, subordinating themselves to the local authorities in most matters of external relations.
Changeling culture has become rich and beautiful over many centuries of abundance, and the spartan, near-starvation conditions of the Bad Old Days are long since a thing of the past. Changeling artists are expert at evoking feelings of awe, admiration and love, and Changeling art is widely popular throughout the Multiverse.
The Changelings are peaceful and prosperous now, no longer a danger to any other life. But their intense love and loyalty toward their Hives still remains, and should some new menace attack, they would fight bravely in defense of their own, their worlds and their civilization.

Is the Twisting of the Flutter Ponies something from your timeline? Are flutter ponies canon?

The Flutter Ponies were from G1. My concept that Discord Twisted the Flutter Ponies into the Changelings comes from Alex Warlorn, but is based on certain suspicious similarities between the Flutter Ponies (and the sapient bee-like race with which they were sometimes symbiotic, sometimes hostile) and the Changelings. Discord's insanity at the time was such that he does not clearly remember how he did it, and now that he's saner, can't reverse the spell.
