    Happy Holidays

This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Just Like Her by Bad_Seed_72

Rarity Versus Bukkake Ninjas by Fiddlebottoms
[Story tagged mature] [my original review]

Well, more or less just skimmed this one. This was… Well, I can’t say that the title was false advertising. Not one I’d recommend, but as parodies go it wasn’t a crime against writing or anything. Post-review fun fact. The spellcheck doesn’t recognize the word bukkake. I think it’s just pretending ignorance so it can save some of its dignity.

Ugh, of course this one would be the first of a set of five so it's at the top.

After the Night by GrassAndClouds2
[story link] [my original review]

A more substantial Lunaverse story. This one is a follow up to the big season one finale. I wouldn’t recommend reading this by yourself, it’s got like a half-dozen stories of build-up behind it. Not that they were all leading to this exactly. Just this little story has a lot of weight of previous events and has a lot of character development from other stories about characters that aren’t even here that give this more depth. Still, I found it a interesting story. Contrasts nicely with the light and fluffy slice of life stories I’d read just previously. Plus I get lots of amusement about cheery Pinkie Pie and ruthless politician Prince Blueblood hooking up together. Which happened a story or two ago in the series, I think, but this one reminded me of it.

That's All by Archmage Ludicrous

A character study of Applejack’s hat. No, really. That’s what this story boils down to. Sort of. This was a lot shorter than I expected, but that only meant that I wanted more when I stumbled off the end. Great look at Pinkie Pie, Applejack, and the hat in question. Nothing worldshattering. Just a nice look at the two ponies involved in a slice of life moment.

Despicable Blue by Einhander

Ah, customer service. I guess I got lucky the one year or so I had a customer service job. Worked the book section of a large multimedia store, so everybody went to the movies and games and music and us in the books pretty much stared at the wall between the two customers we got on a busy day. So I missed first hand experience with a lot of the downsides. Yet I could still emphasize with Blueblood’s troubles in this very funny story. It occurs to me that it’s kind of funny that so much fan fiction is about Blueblood. He’s barely in the show, heck, some of the background ponies have more screen time then he does. Once again a example of how a fandom can invent entire universes out of the slightest scrap of information.

Just Like Her by Bad_Seed_72
[story link] [my original review]

Very sweet story. I haven’t seen many stories about the Cutie Mark Crusaders growing up. A few with older versions, but none that are about the transition. This isn’t quite growing up, but just the first little bits of growing up starting to show. This story is a well-written look at Rarity and Sweetie Bell’s relationship. Not to mention something of a passing comment on what young girls should not be paying attention to when they are looking at what society is pushing as an ideal way to look.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback. It might take a while, as more precision means I need to actually think about things instead of just doing stream of consciousness typing.

That's All is another in a long line of stories that I just don't seem to get. I've been told by several people that it's amazing, but it just seems like any ol' story to me. It's certainly not bad or anything, but it doesn't wow me either.

It is a very artistic/literary piece. I don't think it is the best thing since sliced bread either, but it is a solid enough story (I gave it a green thumb). I think a lot of its strength comes from how compact it is.

2920309 It's certainly true that it does a lot with its just over one thousand words. Voicing is decent and the plot moves right along. I just wouldn't pick that story out of a line-up, you know? It does nothing memorable in my eyes, but like I said, it's certainly not bad at all.

But I never like anything, so it really says more about me than the story. I'm probably unreasonable.

Well, to each his own. You aren't wrong for feeling that way about it; I can see why it would be unappealing to some people. Some stories really aren't for everybody. Actually, that's true of most stories in the end.

2920111
I wouldn't call it amazing. Just good. To continue the metaphor, I could pick it out of a lineup but only if someone asked and gave me a bit of time. Comfortably above average is where I'd put it.

2920526 I'd agree that it's above average. I just don't think it's amazing like several people have told me. It's a firmly average above average story.
