Question for those of you versed in Chinese mythology. · 10:01pm Mar 28th, 2015

Is a rough association of Luna with Chang'e and Celestia with Xihe too far fetched? From what I understand they are the Moon and Sun goddesses, respectively. A friend of mine was wondering, so any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure how to respond to that, I do know about two powerful dragons, however. Futs Lung and Shen Long.

Since I don't have anything useful to say, I will instead comment that this is not the sort of blog I usually expect to see from you.

I don't really know... but with some tweaking here and there, it could make for an amazing story. Be it pre-Equestria, pre-Nightmare Moon, or even a 'recent' development.

Luna with Chang'e

Yes pls

Funny voice packs aside, I could definitely see it working, assuming your friend does a bit of research.

I don't know anything about Xihe, though.

Taking two minutes to check Wikipedia gave only a little insight. Their pages are both sparse.

They do say, however, link them via the story of the ten sun ravens and Houyi the Archer. Xihe was the mother of said sun ravens, and may or may not have ridden behind them on a chariot. Chang'e was Houyi's wife, who consumed the elixir of immortality given to him as reward for slaying all but one of the ravens. The version I just read said Chang'e drank it to keep it from falling into the hands of one of Houyi's enemies, and the resulting influx of power from a draught made for two people sent Chang'e to the sky, where she made her home in the moon.

It would be...interesting to see how such a scenario would play out with Celestia and Luna, vis a vi Luna's husband killing Celestia's children. Or some other thing, I don't know.

But yes, there is a fic somewhere in there.

I'm Chinese in descent, though I most certainly don't live In China. I think that the main points are there, someone goes to the moon for some silly reason, etc, etc. I don't exactly know how you can put Celestial in there though, considering that Xihe isn't exactly a very important part of the story. And if you made it into a relatively canon (like, makes sense and follows the fact that Celestia does not have ten children kind of canon) pony fic, then it would have all these weird deviations or holes in it.

Then again, this is fimfiction. Anything is possible. Spike could turn into Cai Shen Ye while you're at it.:moustache:

It could make an interesting story.

I don't know much about Xihe but I did quick research. Xihe is a sun goddess and one of the wives of Emperor Jun, the most mighty God of them all. She was the mother of Ten Suns, in the form of Three-legged crows, who lived in a Mullberry Tree. Each day Xihe bathed one of her children in the river and the child-Sun would fly up into the sky and be the Sun for each day. One day all ten sun birds came out on the same day, causing the world to burn. Houyi the archer shoot down all but one of the sun birds which has to be the Sun everyday so that the world has light. She is said to have created the calendar.

Chang'e (Chang-O) is the goddess of the Moon. She is the wife of Houyi, the god of archery. Chang'e and Houyi were originally immortals living in heaven, until one day the sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten suns, causing the earth to scorch. After killing nine of the sons they were sent as punishment to live as mere mortals on earth. To restore their immortality, they need to take half of the pill of immortality, which was in the possesion of the Queen Mother of the West. However, Chang'e accidently swallowed the whole pill and floated into the air until she landed on the Moon.

(On a side note, Chang'e is one of my favorite gods in smite)
