I FINALLY MADE IT, EVERYPONY! :pinkiehappy:

A good ten years and change after reaching 500 followers, a little bump from participating in the BarCast's finale episode tipped me over the top into four digits. Thanks so much to all the readers who've chosen to keep an eye on my sporadic fic production over the years - expect more of that to come soon...

So, as some of you may be aware, I am participating in the EQD More Most Dangerous Game fic contest, and I ended up picking Cupcakes as the inspiration for my story.

Now, I had originally planned to do a post-apocalypse story based on Fallout: Equestria, but I changed my mind for a couple of reasons and wrote this tidy little horror in a shockingly short time instead.

Firstly, I had this idea at about the same time, and it was a more original approach than my other idea, which was a fairly run of the mill post-apocalypse tale... though not based on any other properties.

Secondly, I felt like Cupcakes would likely get fewer entries than FO:E, if the literally millions of words put down based on it already are any sign. It seemed wiser to tread narrower paths.

Third, I like a challenge, and the love-hate that the original Cupcakes has received inspired me to try and make something non-trolling, dramatic, and plausible from it.

Fourth... Patchwork Poltergeist repeatedly dared me to write this one instead. :pinkiecrazy:

On first blush, the reaction seems to be more negative than just about anything I've ever written... but I'm not sure I can trust that. I know a fair number of folks will smash the red button the INSTANT they see Cupcakes heritage. So, I'm not sure what the judges will think. I guess we'll see.

Personally, though, I am fairly pleased with it. It's a short, elegant little thriller, with some darkness, some creepy, and some deep, deep tragedy. Also, I got to tick off another psychological disorder appearing in my stories: Postpartum Psychosis!

I'm glad I took the road less traveled on this one.

If we were choosing fics based on what we liked and not what we thought we could work with (I've had an urge to pick at the multitudes of possibilities for MLD since forever) I'd have definitely chosen Cupcakes. I love Cupcakes and you're good at Pinkie Pie, so naturally I passively aggressively stared at you from the internet until you wrote it.

The odd little twist at the end made it worth it. That which makes someone superhuman IS terrifying.
