Been working on something. · 9:46am Jan 24th, 2015
Been pretty quiet on my end, as expected. Some people have sent me some fics to read, and I apologize for the delay in those. Getting over a very bad bout of the flu on top of everything. Bleh.
So, after a break from writing, I started jumping around and trying different things. Every project I moved onto presented me the same issues, where it was just a struggle. Rather than toss in the towel there, I kept trying and tried out an idea I've had for awhile: a backstory on Rapidfire and my Wonderbolts HC. No big overarching story, but shorter, isolated events.
But I've run into a little roadblock. I know the idea of the break is to not really focus too heavily on my readers, but I've been wanting to write it first person. Allows me to really delve into Rapidfire's psyche (sorta how I've been happily deconstructing poor Rainbow Dash in WRTMI, slowly driving her insane. It gets worse, don't worry!)
Just wanted some opinions on that, and whether first person makes sense in past tense or present tense (or present tense with past thrown in when obviously talking about things that already happened).
Also, there's gonna be a lot of swearing. Like, holy shit.
Goodlucky, I've been writing a one shot in hopes that people enjoy it enough to write more so I can make a multichapter story with an audience who's interested.
Damn, flu for you, too? Sorry to hear that. This flu season has been straight up bonkers, gotta say.
And glad to hear you've discovered an idea that you want to dedicate time to! That's always a welcome feeling. And although I'm not exactly the guy to ask about first person(considering that I never use it), I will say that writing suspenseful things often works better when you do it in a first-person present tense. Helps with making things feel more neurotic or awkward. Or, at least, that's what I've experienced. Otherwise, I don't have much to add, hate to say.
The good news is that since this isn't going to be a massive overarching epic or anything, it leaves you a looot more ability to experiment with how you write it. So, go nuts.
fuck yeah brehhhhh

I dont have any experience writing like that, but i have read some really good books written in first person
past tense.
But apparently it is also a difficult way to write. Dan Abnett, a sci-fi and fantasy novelist, has said that his most annoying decicion when writing his Eisenhorn trilogy, was using first person.
Of course that should not keep you from trying it out, and i would very much like to read about Rapidfire.
2743968 that's a good plan
2744040 definitely hoping to nail the suspenseful thing. And the smaller stories is nice, since I can finish one little arc and... leave it until I can write again without leaving anyone hanging. Another benefit with first person is Rapidfire can tell the stories without necessitating his crazy accent, though it'll still exist in dialogues.

I'll need to look up his work. At least for an example, anyway. Glad to know you'd be happy to read more on Rapidfire, it'll allow me to expand upon other locals the Wonderbolts have traveled to perform/do missions in as well... starting with Dragonspire.
Besides, I'd finally get to write the full storyline of Rapidfire meeting Spitfire, hinted at from WRTMI.
Excessively vulgar ponies is gonna be... interesting
