So I was originally trying to write this big essay blogpost about where I've been and the future of Bookish and all that, but... it didn't pan out. So we'll do the much, much shorter version that should still tell you what's important.

In the meantime, now might be a good time to fire up Netflix and (re?)watch the Equestria Girls movie. Yes, the first one. Yes, the perfectly serviceable one everyone throws under the bus to justify their approval of Rainbow Rocks that one.

What if I loved Rainbow Rocks so much that I looked down on every other movie in existence for the crime of not being Rainbow Rocks, and not just EQG1? Do I get a pass then?
I actually like the first one, but I still can't bear to watch it since RR because whenever Sunset shows up I'm like "Dammit Sunset don't be that way, you're better than this!" and I burst into tears when I see her in that crater after the climax.

Normally that's not an issue for me because I'm way behind with the comics and only read them months after their release, which is plenty of time for... er... honest buccaneers to acquire and share their booty if you will. But this, this is the one comic I want right now because it has Sunset Shimmer in it and I love her as much as you can love a fictional character without being religious. (shots fired

Off topic rant you can safely ignore: I hate Apple with a passion. iOS gets only worse with every update. I can't write a single post or comment anywhere without Safari crashing at least two three (it actually managed to crash again in the ten second window I needed to copy this post over) times, deleting all my progress if I forget to copy my work every three seconds. That is not hyperbole, that is precisely what happened during this very comment. I now actually have to resort to writing in a different app and then copying it over when I'm finished.
I'm glad RR seems to have gotten most people in the fandom on board the Equestria Girls train, but I'm right there with you Bookish in your take on the first movie. I've been halfheartedly defending it for a year and a half, so at least I'm glad people are just passively hating it instead of actively hating it.
It would be nice if people stopped kneejerk hating Flash as well, but we probably still need some more character development for him for that to ever have a prayer of coming to pass.

Yep, unless he gets some massive character development, the Flash hate won't die down. The problem is that he's such an indefensible character in nearly every aspect that a kneejerk reaction from the community is almost always guaranteed.
To be honest, I'd really rather they not remove screentime from the rest of the show to give him that 'development', though

There's no chance he won't be in any future EQG movies or series, and until he does get that that additional character development he'll continue being a lightning rod. I for one am tired of the fandom spending so much effort to hate him, the unpleasantness bleeds over and makes all of us worse.
I also disagree so very strongly that his character is indefensible, but since I've written about three different comments and then deleted them for probably being too harsh I really have idea to discuss this.

What's funny is I actually like pony Flash a bit more, he's the one we know is working for a living as a guardspony, and one with enough mid-level rank to be an announcer at various events and being Cadance's bodyguard (well, temporary bodyguard, maybe just escort) in the episode with her, Twilight, and Discord.
That's probably my weakness for royal guard stories, though. Random highschool dude is one thing, but a guy in uniform has so much more story potential.

Even then I... do not at all share the fascination with royal guards and military trappings that the majority of this site's userbase does, I'm afraid. With scant few exceptions, that kind of stuff actually sends me in the other direction entirely.
I was more into the whole interdimensional starcrossed romance thing. Which Hasbro couldn't have screwed up more if they'd tried. Even with the milquetoast character they'd crafted for the sole purpose of having Twilight fall over him like a cat scratching post, there was hope. He was nice enough, and at the very beginning of RR he was downright adorable.
But nope! Can't follow through. Which is fine with me because far as I'm concerned all roads lead to SunLight, but still. :|

In the show itself I can't imagine them ever doing so. The mane six are the main heroes after all, and the guard and most other characters are almost always going to be to the side and in the background. When I say story potential, I'm honestly more talking about fanfiction story potential then any official media.

Unfortunately... you kinda also have Shining Armor for that, who's better established as a character, and he's never threatened to sink every ship involving the most popular character on the show.
