Shetlander Rewrite: Names · 9:51am Aug 5th, 2014

One of the clangers that mars the original Shetlander is the terrible mess I made of Shetlander names.

For the rewrite, I'm going with two simple rules:
1. All Shetlanders have a personal name followed by their clan name.
2. All clan names are some cheezy pun based on the prefix 'Mac' and assorted Scottish stereotypes, cliches, corruptions of existing surnames, and symbols.

This should make it easier to read the names, as there won't be Google Gaelic.

So expect to meet the MacHoofs, MacThistles, and some Macintoshs as well. The MacAdamias, MacAronis, MacNeeps and MacTaties can put on a spread, and the MacIrnbrus can provide the drinks. If you need textiles, ask a MacRame. If it's warriors you need, you can't go past a MacHismo or MacHete.

There's over twenty clan names in the list, which is probably enough.

One more thing. Dinna' call a MacGutraid 'Greedy'; they've all heard that lame joke enough times, an' they'll sit on ye.

Honestly? It feels like you're gonna be losing a lot of personality with this.

I really need to catch up with this story... or given what you're saying here, maybe start over from the beginning.

You might have a point there, and right now I'm thinking of a terrible sight gag involving a meal at a MacStovies, as opposed to having a clan of that name. (Traditionally MacStovies is supposed to be followed up by the MacTrots, especially close to closing time.):rainbowderp::pinkiesick:

I do have to admit that the exotic sound of 'Mucmarfóir' does compare better when up against, say, 'Antler MacIdiotHoof'. However, names can be changed later for effect, and the MacPrefix allows for some mildly amusing and Goonatic MacWordplay, methinks.:twilightangry2::twistnerd:
