Pony Diet and Meat

Now, i get that ponies are herbivores an' all, so they wouldn't dare to eat meat.

But I am certain I saw a bologna sandwich in "A Bird in a Hoof" in front of Applejack when she wasn't sure what she should eat first. So it raises the question for me, could these ponies eat meat if they wanted to? I mentioned a pizza parlor in my fic "The Story Retold" but I never use pepperoni as a topping for the characters to eat

Meat is always substituted somehow: Hay-fries, hay/oatburger, etc. Does anyone else see what I'm saying? The bologna sandwich was probably an oversight but still.
