Hello there, and welcome to another thrilling update from that one pony writer, Lab.
During a conversation with a friend—and grammar... let's say "enthusiast"—he pointed out that I didn't need italics for personal thoughts, because I've been writing in first person. To be honest, I have to agree. I'll have to rework the tense of a few of those sentences, but that's not anything major.
Furthermore, removing the italics from personal thoughts will "free" italics to use for Dave. I know a lot of you are used to the brown text, but bear with me. It might just be me, but Dave's text color was a bit darker when I first started writing Gears in the Void. Now it's too bright and jarring. Besides, colored text in stories is almost always a poor idea anyway.
I would have tagged a story, but I can only pick one and it applies to both stories—there are a couple italicized sentences in Sprockets in the North.
Oh my. Now I feel like I just gave you more work.

So it is not necessary to use italics for internal thoughts, but they can still be used for them for stylistic purposes right?
2205672 If I were using third person, I still would be using italics for internal thoughts. In first person, everything is technically an internal thought since it's through the eyes of that one character.
Stylistic choice is kind of a weird way to approach it. There's no exact rule about keeping them for internal thoughts, but it's widely recognized as such. Also, they're still used for certain titles—books and television shows, for example.

I keep forgetting about first person narrative. Good point.
