More on Fall Down, songfics, etc. · 1:14am May 17th, 2014
First, the important stuff. Fall Down has become my 16th story posted on Equestria Daily, and I just wanted to let folks know that I updated parts VII and XI a couple days ago. It's mostly minor changes, but things that make stuff like "what happened to Twilight's husband?" a little more clear.
Since that took all of two lines, I may as well use this space to talk about my approach to songfics, because I haven't done that in a while. :B
Back when I wrote Dance 'Til We're High, I was phenomenally irritated by the trend of writers approaching stories based on songs. They all had the annoying tendency to include the song somewhere in the text (which, I should note, is at least no longer acceptable here on Fimfiction), not to mention just generally being poor about referencing it in the first place. I didn't want to be reminded that what I was reading was based on a song, I wanted the story to be a story.
So I came up with a set of rules.
1) Never use the song lyrics in the text. (This can sometimes be bent for including dialogue featured in the lyrics, but even then you can often avoid it by paraphrasing.)
2) Be sure to use the entire song as the plot and theme of your story. (Though it's totally acceptable and often times necessary to go beyond what the song lays out, something I didn't do with Fall Down as much as I should have.)
3) The title of the story should be the title of the song.
And I think there's maybe one more, but I forgot it. :B But, DTWH, Treehouse and Fall Down all follow these rules, and while I have mixed feelings about how well I did each of them (DTWH has a poor romance, I sacrificed the story in Fall Down for formalist shenanigans, Treehouse... I actually really like, I just wish more people shared that opinion), I'm happy with how they turned out for the most part. So now I would like to post a list of songs that I have plans to turn into stories, not that I'm likely to do any of these any time soon, or ever. :B
Coldplay- Yellow (sad Fluttermac)
Train- Drops of Jupiter (TwiLuna that might not work post season 3)
The Darkness- One Way Ticket (what I would have done for the first writeoff had I known about it soon enough to participate)
Lyle Lovett- If I Had a Boat (if I can pull this off, it's gonna be amazing)
Son of Dork- Ticket Outta Loserville (just imagine Twist in the POV role)
Don Diablo- M1 Stinger (sad Derpy fic that's likely not gonna work)
Third Eye Blind- Anything (sad FleurPants)
Coheed and Cambria- Feathers (the song is so fucking convoluted it might be impossible, but it'd be Gildash)
The 1975- Chocolate (I really want to do a ScratchTavia Bonnie and Clyde fic based on this, but like M1 Stinger, there's no fucking way it could work)
AFI- Love Like Winter (I don't even have this in my list of stories, it'd be so impossible, but it would likely be a Pinkie/Bubble Berry clopfic, likely with vampirism, but given that I already put the "before you were born" part into Fall Down, my desire to figure out how to turn this into a story is nil)
Also, you get a peek into my music collection! :O
Lastly, I would like to share a few other songs I like titled Fall Down, because why not. :V Starting with the Molly's Yes one in case you missed it.
(This one's close enough.)
Toad the Wet Sprocket is such a great band. Fall Down is probably my favorite song from that list. *Perpares to be lynched.*
this one breaks every rule and im sure it also breaks many other rules that were not addressed here

Following you just for all those fabulous songfic ideas.

You're not me, so do the do. :B

Don't get your hopes up, I'm embroiled in longfics right now. D:
So her husband was a changeling?
2120010
nnnno, though I'm interested to know why you think so :)
Because she was worried about changelings at her wedding. The only other thing I got from the fic was that he did something bad and they split up, was there anything more specific than that?

Nothing more specific, no. And the changelings thing was actually a callback to the episode. Checking for changelings is just sort of a thing you do now. :B
I will unfollow you if you make a song inspired by the band that made Drive-By.
No I won't.
But I'll be giving you the stink-eye at Bronycon.
