I wonder whether I'm the only British ponyfic author who sometimes has trouble deciding how consciously to write "American" for the sake of this fandom. I don't mean spelling -- I stick to British English for that, since correct BrEng is a lot better than dodgy AmEng. Nor do I really mean dialogue: we all know what (eg) Applejack sounds like, so that's not something you have wiggle-room on unless you're deliberately having fun. Rather, I mean vocabulary and grammar. In the first draft of "The 20 Percent Solution" I used the word "worktop" -- only to discover that Americans didn't say it. "Counter", conversely, seems a bit strange to my British eyes. So I changed it to "table" instead. Also, in some cases I could imagine the descriptive text calling for BrEng but the dialogue for AmEng. An example: BrEng has "in hospital" where AmEng has "in the hospital"; I've seen the British version being "corrected" here and there. Lots of fun for everyone!
