Okay, I wasn't expecting that particular thing.
It's weird. One of the things I've been most wrong about in the past year was... Well, there were two things. The first was when I thought, "I'm sure I can finish Crown of Night before season 4 starts." The second was "I doubt that season 4 or the comic series will mention any details about Star Swirl the Bearded that will make trouble for my story. After all, he's only been mentioned like four times total in the show so far, and those mentions had just about zero detail. That'll probably stay the same."
I would never have believed that I could be so wrong.
I just read issue 17 of the comic book, which features Star Swirl the Bearded very prominently. Suffice it to say that it is entirely, 100% incompatible with my story. Everything from the chronology, to the characterization, down to the story of how Star Swirl got his hat. Kind of irks me. But, I'm gonna keep going with my original plan, and hopefully the readers will appreciate it on its merits.
An update to my writing progress: I now have two chapters more or less ready to go. But the first one is... difficult. I have grave concerns about it: it's full of information that I need to include for the sake of the story, but it just doesn't feel right to me. The second one, though, I think is excellent. Hopefully I'll make peace with the first chapter soon, and then they'll probably both go up at the same time.
No worries regarding conflict with the comics, plenty of fics conflict with the show itself and work out just fine.
It's entirely up to you whether or not you choose to incorporate this into your headcanon. Heck, if you hadn't posted this blog, you could've feigned ignorance.
It is your choice if you want to incorporate issue 17 with your story (your story and your prerogative after all), but as someone who enjoys reading what you have already written, I would say do not stress over it. You have set up a wonderful little universe which I am more than willing to accept on its own terms.

Who ever cares about the comic? marke the story AU and move on!

Thanks all and yes, I'm gonna continue onwards with the plan I already had (although a reference to Star Swirl's candlestick from the s4 episode "Three's a Crowd" has already made it into The Education of Clover the Clever). I hope you'll all enjoy the two new chapters, when I get around to posting them.

Because I read your story about Strswirl and Clover first, it feels like cannon to me, no matter the official sources. I don`t think this should affect the way you write or the story you`re trying to tell. Your stories about these two are aweome so far. Keep up the brilliant work.
