History tends to be written by the winners. Sad, but true. Often times, the winner may have done some deplorable things in their quest for victory. Perhaps these things are truly justified and history will look back upon them as they were: Needed casualties and conditioning. Still, the victor may sweep these unfavorable 'needs' under the pages of history; glorifying the work they had done. In this act, history will never look favorably upon the ones who lost. For them, history has the tendency to demonize or twist the events they were involved in. It's horrible to think about. So often, the only way to truly know history the way it happened would be to have actually been there.
Even then... History is never has kind as you would hope...
