Sometimes it really bothers me when Discord gets called insane.
If he's crazy, then he's crazy like a fox. Not everything that he does makes sense, but since when did everything that anyone ever did make sense? For the most part, he has his shit together, and he simply strikes me as being more inventive than most. Doing things the normal way is boring when you can do them any way that you please, but he does have a certain amount of logic, most of the time. And it's easier to get away with some things when they are seemingly innocuous and random. He's the ultimate scam artist.
Anyway, I just feel that calling him crazy can easily be misconstrued as a catch-all-term for brushing off his cleverness, but I might be wrong. Regardless, that is why it's a pet peeve of mine.
he is by far the smartest villain on the show, in fact he might be the smartest character on the show in general.

Am I incorrect though? Do the people who refer to him as insane also tend to write him as if he's an idiot? I might just be making unfounded assumptions, and I wanted a second opinion about that.

I tend to steer clear, the minute I see anything suggesting they think of him that way, because skimming ahead has revealed disappointment, as far as my vague memory goes. I guess I've seen it more often in comments than stories, though. Then again, I haven't actually read that many fanfics on this site yet. I am very, very slowly making my way around some that I bookmarked, because I am trying to force myself to write, instead of read.

Discord does things that seem bizarre, but I think he's just doing things a lot of people secretly wish they could do. That's why he's such a great character. I mean, no one says "If I had magical powers, I'd make a peanut butter sandwich".

Precisely. Having seemingly limitless power opens up a lot of prospects, and anyone would start to explore those further, once they recognized their true potential.
I think people also overestimate sanity though. It's not as easily quantified as most of us like to think, nor are most people as logical as they'd expect. The brain is a fascinating, yet imperfect thing, even when it's brilliant.
