So, some thoughts I shared on TheDescendant's DA journal, but wanted to put here because I think someone actually cares about my opinions. (HAH! I laugh at myself and my delusions!) But why do I bother, you ask? Because I'm insane.
ANYWAY
Shining Armor and Twilight have a very good relationship. Almost too good. I mean, I have a little sister, grew up with one: they are unholy terrors and should be sealed in a box until they turn 18, at which point you should marry them off to a rich family and wave bye bye.
...I may have some issues. ;)
Shining Armor is interesting as his special talent appears to be projecting a shield matrix on the forest moon of Endor. He probably should stay clear of Ewoks in the future.
I think Cadence should really have only been made a regular Unicorn, not an alicorn or pegacorn or whatever the explanation is for her. It really wasn't necessary (save for one action scene that was not needed for the plot at all), and it would have made her a truly awesome character. Still, it's not a deal-breaker, so it's a "meh" from me. Overall, I like her, as she seems to be a very nice pony and very caring. Her special talent appears to be mending hearts.
Big surprise? Creepy, freaky insect abomination badguys. Seriously freaky. And oh God I don't want to see what certain elements of the fandom do with them.
Still, Changelings in the Ponyverse feed on Love, so I wonder if their poison is hate? If so, that reminds me of a quote:

Effects on my fanon: Sweet merciful God, why do I torture myself trying to write ANYTHING while a season is running? Well, at least most of my stuff is marked "alternate universe" anyway.
Although it was nice to see Celestia get a badass moment, and also get knocked out with a justifiable explanation. IMHO it was acceptable both from a storytelling point (why have primary protagonists at all if their sun goddess solves all their problems for them?) and also from a setting point (showing that love is pretty dang strong).

Agreed on all points about the changelings, especially with the good Inquisitor's quote. I like my villains to receive their comeuppance in rather brutal fashions.
And I actually have thought about the "hate being their poison" shtick for a while now and was thinking about incorporating it into my HiE story, considering that one of my two main human characters is essentially a walking and swearing ball of rage and hate (when provoked).

Amazing, ain't it? It still makes me laugh at times when I sit back and think about it.
The only thing that really bothered me was that they pulled a "Word of Blake" and pulled the changelings out of thin air, without ever mentioning them before. With Discord and NMM, at least they taled about them a little before-hand. Still loved the episodes, but that could have used a little work.

I do tend to agree, it was a "WTF" moment. I even felt like that for a bit, like "oh come on, seriously?" But then I remembered it is a TV show for kids, and really while it would be nice to have a buildup, frankly it's not something that would work for the target audience. Not to mention, they basically crammed a 90-minute movie story into 44 minutes, so they had to cut somewhere.
Besides, they did at least have the whole "threat against Canterlot" thing going on for mister Shield Generator (dibs on that as an OC name!) to put up that forcefield. Seems Twilight's own usage in "Ponyville Confidential" was from family experience.
Anyway, yeah, out of the blue, but not too bad; at least they were defeated before they murdered half the population with A-bombs.
That's my job for when I go kill me some Changelings. Time for a bug-hunt, boys!
And of course you picked the BattleTech universe as your epic fic who have the strang anti-nuke policy despite having the technology to have much more fun weapons of mass destruction in regular use. Though they do call them 'atomicks' so every time I read that back in the old source books I'd imagine Patrick Stewart said it.
Also screw nukes, just rod from heaven them. Though stomping on them in a mech would be appropriately awesome (and a bitch to clean)...hmmm ideas :3
