    Hello

    Hey guys!

How to Make YOUR Blurb/Description Better

So, I've been spending a fair bit of time here. It's a site for writers, similar to Fimfiction, but a tad more... general.

How You Go About It - The Editing Process

I've been writing for a little over two years now, both as a terribly time-consuming hobby, and for work. When I started, I thought that rereading, editing and drafting were sins. They were wastes of my precious time. Now, after many a mistake, my views have changed.

Names · 12:40am Apr 17th, 2012

There was a time when I had just stared writing (a big three months ago) that I hated names. Such complex little things they are. So easy to miss-handle. Especially in the pony-verse. Now, I relish the opportunity to name a character. Pony names have so much power behind them. Ever part of the name is based off of the nuances of the character they are built from. Even the show utilizes this very well, and not just for the main characters (Although they are well named), even the antagonists have great names. The Great and Powerful Trixie! Could you find more obnoxious or arrogant?!

And so, in that spirit, I too, spend hours, gleefully searching for the proper name for one of my characters.

Arnaquer, the French revolutionary, smuggler, and of course, swindler. Simple name, fun to write (This is more important than one may think) and it hints at the character so much.
Kami Kaze, do I even need to hint at this guy's personality?
Wrenches, the slightly insane, super jealous mechanic.
Preacher, the grumpy old leader that sighs constantly.

Building characters is a true joy to me, naming them is part of that joy.

Now, I congratulate any and all who have suffered through that boorish text!

I propose a contest of sorts, with I as the only (very biased) judge. Chapter nine of Steam Gears and Wings has a... blank, of sorts. This character isn't important in the overall plot, just a pony that has a few lines of text, then disappears for a while. This character needs a name....

In other news, I also need names for well over a dozen Rebel ships.

Comment away fellows!

Brief Wind. The pony that says one line should have that name.

Also some rebel names can be...
Heat Flash
Steel Bill
Cell Iron
Dr. Pain
Gordon Freecolt
Ender Wing
Knight Night
Lily Pod
Sandy Klaus
Commander Faust
Hammer Tyme
Peanut Brittle
Chef Silver Platter
Dr. Luv
Vick Newman
Bluff Speaker

And that's about all I can think of.

Remington
Bolt Lock

Surprised by the lack of ship names. People usually jump on the opportunity to name those.

72042 ship names!

There's

Bucephelus ( after Alexander the great's horse; it should be a ramming ship if anything)
Sleiphnir
The Kelpie
want more?

72055
More is good!

But more ponified, and think about the rebellion in Star Wars!

Have some helpful music:

I don't think you have anything to worry about with readers like these :pinkiehappy:

Looking for a name for that character?

Why not Two Bits? Bonus points if he is a salescolt of less-than pristine goods, and runs out of a two-bit operation.

Couldn't resist the chance to have a bit of a pun- he'd be giving his two cents on what's going on.

72445
Character names with puns and/or who are related to the character are the best!

I really dislike seeing a fanfic where the author has OC's with lame names, it really breaks the immersion, that's why I spend so much time looking for the right name for each character. I would like to think that I've done a decent job to date. Although, I don't think I should be so pretentious just yet.

Hardly. You were speaking that the function of the character parallels their name. If I had to write him, a character with that name would take the function of an older, more guiding role that might have a few nuggets of useful advice. (Think of a bartender-type character... that's what he'd serve as.)

And pun-based character names are only truly funny if they fulfill the purpose that you set out for them, or they are just a one-use character that you don't plan on re-using.

Chapter coming soon, or did I read the whole blank in the chapter wrong :pinkiegasp:

Pony Names! Cloud Runner? Rising Light? Chain Bolt? (I did have a character in an FoE story called Magic Bolt once, but the name was meant to make him seem slightly silly on purpose because he is honestly a somewhat pathetic person. Poor Magic...)

Ship names! (How'd you feel about using names from the Rebel/ New Republic ships in the Expanded Universe? Some of those names are cool.)

Eclipse (Because the Empire's the sun, y'know?)
Pirate's Rest (A medical ship?)
Rude Awakening
Lunar Gambit
Home One (A flagship or perhaps a fighter/troop carrier?)
Gilead Balm (Medical ship?)
Miskaponic
Rebel's Hammer
Rebel's Fire
West Wind (Shelley's poem is about revolution in a way. Rebellions are revolutions sometimes and stuff, no?)

72630

Nope, not for a little while, most likely not until next week! That is, unless I find myself a full-time editor, I am VERY picky with my editors, not anypony will do.

I am going to release another short fic this week, Pipsqueaks going to have some fun in that one. Watch out for it!

72968

Ohh, some of these are good, I like Eclipse, very Lunay.

72968

Home One - It's a trap!

73246

This is a minor spoiler, but there will be a "It's a trap" moment... I can't resist not doing it...

Will there be a "Oh the ponanity!" scene? (Hindenburg) where a propaganda ship bursts into flames?

73179

To this I say, AWE MAN! :pinkiesad2::raritycry::fluttercry::applecry:

73246
Sorry mate, no editor, no fic... I am at chapter seven right? It's not that fun of a chapter anyway. Chapter eight on the other hoof....

Which hoof, there's 3 others to choose from :facehoof:
:derpyderp2:

72968

Eclipse Super Star Destroyer standing by!:fluttershysad:

73246

I'm so glad someone caught that one. :3

I'd offer if I wasn't working on a 15 page paper on Roman views of history as cycle of moral decline and regeneration. (You know tiring it is to write/say that every time someone asks me what I'm writing on??)

I'm looking forward to seeing some Rebels. I always wished that we coulda seen more of them in the movies. Their bases and troops were so cool. And Mon Cal cruisers~ Oh heavens some of my most favorite space ships ever.

Out of curiosity, do the Rebels and the Empire use the same ships? Like, in the aftermath of the war and such did the Rebels just sort of woo some Imperial captains? In Star Wars they (mostly) used fairly different ship types. I mean, they shared some designs like Nebulon B's and some smaller stuff, but fighters and big ships were mostly different because the Rebels could buy ships outside of Imperial space. Would they be able to hide ship building like that on the same planet/continent as Blueblood's empire?

73540
At this very moment I a writting the introduction to Echo base If you don't get this... please leave) and I have been debating over rebel ships for a while... Thoughts?

EDIT: You like the Mon Cal ships? I loved the Imperial ships, the rebel capital ships... meh.

o wow, people went nuts with the names... might as well add some:pinkiehappy:

Nuts'n'bolts
Muzzletop

Some of these MIGHT have come from reading other fan fics, so please nobody shoot me for throwing these out!
... actually these ones are useful, might use them for myself, will probably post my fics after the exams and into the summer
hope these are helpful!

73588

Nuts'n'bolts Too late for this one!

And Tasslehoof is familiar... Do you like Dragon Lance perchance?

73593
awww thought so, 'bout tasslehoof, i bet someone else picked it out already and i don't know dragon lance... will check out though. hope the other names are still legible and tasty looking.

73621

Dragon Lance in non pony, an old Adventure series I read as a kid:) one of the characters was tasslehoff... Fun times!

73626

wow, just one letter off, hmmmm

Rebel Ships... you don't have to have this Rebellion form the same way. Why not have the core of their fleet be older-pattern ships of the line? A few cruisers and a bigger ship or two on the fringes of the Kingdom, farther from the reach of Blueblood in the upheaval, might have gone beyond him and joined up with the Rebellion when it came.

The Rebels in Star Wars didn't get that many ships from the ruins of the Republic/nascent empire, but they did get personnel, officers and senators and such.

They probably don't have that many big ships besides though, ya think? Big awesome airships are hard to assemble without some sort of tangible presence. The Rebellion didn't get that many until they had managed to get a few planets, and these probably haven't managed to make any without a few cities or somethin'....

I like Mon Cals as a ship design but the ISD is still my overall favorite. Anytime I played Star Wars Adventures (some game I played with a couple of my friends outside a while back) I would always capture as many ISDs for my primary fleet because not only are they powerful but very intimidating.

What sort of tanks does the Imperial Army use?
Wha are the balloons made of? That is in the destroyers.

73640

You forget that the mane six are part of the rebellion, and it's been hinted quite heavily that they own their own corporations. (Guess who's in charg of making Sparkle Generators?) Not only that, Spectrum Skies is mention as the main provider of Imperial fighter planes. its owned by Rainbow Dash... who is a rebel. So in theory, the rebelion could have ships as good as the Empire, although not nearly in the same quantity.

Oh! Bluh. I thought they had their own corporations and such... I knew AJ and RD were sympathizers, and Pinkie sorta appears to be, but wasn't Twilight making things for the Empire? Though I guess if RD is supplying their fighters, and she's obviously a sympathizer at this point, then they could all be biding their time.

Though... hm. I guess that's right! In that case I don't see why they wouldn't/couldn't use the same sorts of vessels. Except perhaps.... wouldn't big ships sort of draw unwanted attention? Blueblood knows they don't like/support him, but as long as they make him ships then he probably lets them do whatever, right? Then if they start making ships just like his own Imperial Naval vessels that don't end up in his forces, it would force his hands. One or two you could create distractions and get through, but you'd have to settle for different/smaller things so as not to be so obvious.

hmmmm a air ship names
the angels wings (a medical ship maybe because of it being named after fluttershys pet)

oh the epona roman goddes of horses and rider etc
