Why I Think Equestria Is A Planet · 3:58pm Aug 4th, 2013
As you know, there is a phrase - "What on Earth?" - which people use when they're expressing disbelief (at least, that's my understanding of it). So surely the ponified version of this would be "What on Equestria?" — wouldn't it?
Well some people disagree, and think it should be "What IN Equestria?" instead. Their argument is Equestria is a nation, not a planet, so it would be 'in'.
A few of you might know that I personally refer to Equestria as a planet as well as a nation, which is why I think it should be "What on Equestria?". Yes... I know there are other races besides ponies, but COME ON! Given how often we see them, I think it is safe to assume that ponies are the dominant species — which leads me to another reason why I think the planet is called 'Equestria'.
Ponies: We name this planet, Equestria!
Gryphons: Hey! Why do you get to name it? It should be Gryphus!
Minotaur: Er, no. It should be Minotauria.
Buffalo: How about Buffolonia.
Grypons: Pfft, that's real original.
Ponies: You're forgetting that we voted on this.
Minotaur: And you only won because there's lots more ponies than there are the rest of us!
Ponies: *shrug* What can we say? We breed like crazy. Harmony sure is a wonderful aphrodi—
Grypons/Minotaur/Buffalo: EW, STOP!
Ponies:
Anyway, my point is this: I use "What on Equestria?" because I believe that Equestria is a planet.
Season 2, Episode 11 — "Hearth's Warming Eve"
The six friends put on a play that illustrates how Unicorns, Pegasi and Earth Ponies put aside their differences and founded Equestria.
Some of you will probably want to bring this argument up, so allow me to counter it:
Andorra la Vella, Andorra
Djibouti, Djibouti
Guatemala City, Guatemala
Kuwait City, Kuwait
Luxembourg. Luxembourg
Mexico City, Mexico
Monaco, Monaco
Panama City, Panama
San Marino, San Marino
Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe
Singapore, Singapore
Vatican City
Gibraltar, Gibraltar
These are cities with the same name as the country/territory they are located in — so why can't we have a nation which shares the same name as the planet it is on?
Anyway, this is getting to be a rather long blog post so I'll wrap up winter now. This is why I have referred to Equestria as a planet in the past, and it is also why I will continue to do so in the future. If you have any objections then by all means... share them with me.
i say the planet's name is Equss
Well, in the show Twilight has actually said what in Equestria at least twice. Rainbow Dash has said it once and so on.
So for people who say 'What in Equestria' under the assumption that it's a country or nation and not a planet, what expression would it be a ponified version of? I've never heard someone say 'What in America' but I don't know if other countries or nations do that.
Earth, Equus, and Equestria.... its all the same isn't it?

Dunno, you'd have to ask them that.
1261140
Not to some people it isn't.
You forgot to mention Quebec city, Quebec
1261143 well those people can eviscerated and have their remains mashed into pretty rainbows
1261150
Isn't Quebec a province of Canada?
People also say "What in the world" a lot.

I think calling the planet Equestria makes the presence of ponies a bit too pervasive. It seems as though it might limit world-building opportunities that don't involve them in some way or another.
Besides which, I'm fairly sure the other denizens would chafe somewhat at their shared planet being named after only one of the sapient species, disregarding all others. This also applies to "Equess/Equiss" (or however one wants to spell it) and whatever else that makes it clear that the ponies are the all-important species.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for an entertaining depiction of ponies as a culturally imperialistic species of insidious, elitist racists who force the other sapient species into a secondary position (at best), but I feel this is far from the standard view of the matter.
1261262 Don't say that to a Quebecois, they get quite angry.
I say this merely as a point of discussion, not one of discontent. I think calling Equestria both a nation and a planet is a bit odd, but not a true problem. I do, however, have a problem with part of your reasoning.
Saying that we hardly ever see other races, so ponies must be the dominant species is somewhat like going to Poland, seeing almost only Polish people and therefore reasoning that Polish people must dominate the world. If you confine your experiences (the show) to a region (Equestria the nation and a wee bit of dragon nation where there are only dragons) then of course the inhabitants of that nation (ponies) will appear dominant.
Again, aside from that portion of your reasoning I see no problem in calling both the nation and planet Equestria, as the name of the planet is up for grabs. Perhaps this is a point of contention among the different species. Perhaps to that dragons in is Dragonia, or Dragonland. Perhaps to the griffons it is P0n13sSuck4eva. In any case, carry on.

Damn, you were going to say exactly what I was gonna say.
He brings up a good point, though. Mine. The belief that ponies are the dominant species might be flawed because we only ever see one nation in the show. Other nations are mentioned, such as Saddle Arabia, so it's pretty obvious that Equestria is just a nation. Further, we haven't seen anything remotely related to the United Nations as of yet, which means there's no solid general consensus as to the naming of the planet. Ask a pony, the name of the planet is Equestria. Ask a zebra, the name of the planet is Zebrico. Ask a Minotaur, and...well, you get the idea.
Did you... really just say that after deleting the objections and counters I raised? Did you really delete what I said then ask your followers to share the same objections?
Besides everyone knows our planet is named Sol 3 not Earth.... yes that is completely irrelevant... I said it anyway.... because waffles.
