I think I've figured it out! · 2:50pm May 13th, 2013
So, way back in the season one dearth, people were writing "And then suddenly Twilight was an Alicorn" fics. When Twilicorn was officially announced, the fandom went completely bonkers and raged. When the episode came out.... it was actually not too bad. Maybe not EPIC but hey, kid's cartoon.
Now, anybody who's spent enough time on FIMfic has seen the "Ponies turn into humans" fics, right? Like Ponyfall, or my friend Nanashi's "More then a dream." And now we have Equestrian girls, to which the fandom has replied by... going completely bonkers and raging. While I haven't seen the trailer myself, I've caught a few glimpses of GIFs and it doesn't seem to be horrific yet... though maybe not epic. Hmmm.
Maybe we're not upset that it'll be terrible. Maybe we're upset that by taking ideas from fanfics, the writers are sort of "locking down" possible storylines and that any future story about that kind of thing will be called a spinoff of that one episode. But we think that's immature, and so resort to claiming that the episode is horrible in advance.... only to shamefacedly make peace afterwards. We're a jealous fandom, I guess.
Season four prediction: There will be an episode in which SOMEPONY WE KNEW AND TRUSTED WAS ACTUALLY A CHANGELING ALL ALONG! And there will be bonkers raging.
You're definitely right about the Season 4 bonkers raging, I know that much.
Bonus points if it would be Spike. His 'magic' is green, after all.
So does this mean that we'll soon have official pony clop too? Equestria Ladies?
did somepony say changeling? I hope it is Rainbow!
in response to EqG, I have changed my opinion from complete hate to just looking at it like a Hasbro transformation fic. As long as it has no effect on the show I am fine.
but I will never be fine with what they did to the dragon, that was just cruel
Eh, I don't care. I don't treat the Show as any better innately than any fanfiction.
I just read/watch whatever I find interesting. I haven't even watched anything past... Uhm, The episode with Pinkie Pie getting cloned.
But I also ended up spoiling a ton of stuff for myself by reading fanfiction referencing it. Oh well,
I don't mind them setting up Twilight as an Alicorn. I object to Writers treating Readers like idiots. If they actually make a statement that "Noone knew this was coming, stop lying", or similar, that is when I get annoyed. But its still not a huge deal.
But yea. Someone is mad on the internet. Oh well. At least I can still read some fics where Twilight isn't and probably never will be an Alicorn.
Why stop at those examples? Hasbro also picked up "Redeem Trixie and Discord" fanfiction tropes where they spent pretty much the entire episodes with both those characters showing no signs of being interested in doing anything more than senselessly terrorizing ponyville, and then suddenly wanting to make up and be friends at the end, just because.
Hasbro has consistently been using season 3 to crib fanfiction crutches and execute them in the most NOT epic manner, and those are crutches that at least have a 50/50 split on whether they make for good storytelling or not. HiE fics that are good are like Roses amidst a barren nuclear wasteland of Garbage. If Hasbro has been keeping to its Season 3 standards, then we can expect Equestria Girls to execute this in the worst possible manner.
EXCEPT
that in each example mentioned, I actually enjoyed all the OTHER parts of the episodes. So yeah, I fully expect Equestria Girls to be just amusing enough that people wont say it's BAD,(well, people WILL, but it wont actually be bad overall) but at the same time it wont really be GOOD either.
Also, I honestly think the whole Equestria Girls thing is just a damage control response to all the pony porn out there. "Hey, Bronies, please stop trying to fuck our cartoon animals. The media is starting to notice. Here, look, have some nice cartoon humans to fuck, they're just like the ponies, but, y'know, human. The media doesn't care if you do that. Please?"

...that's an interesting interpretation...
