I'm quoting Orwell's Animal Farm, of course.
Looking at all the barnyard noise about the possible spin-off series, Equestria Girls, I'm wondering if this couldn't be a good thing. If I recall correctly, Lauren Faust had cited Sailor Moon as one of inspirations for MLP:FIM and certainly you can see this in the composition of the Mane Six. Perhaps EG would go off more in that direction, with an emphasis on adventure and super-heroing.
But there are key differences. Tsukino Usagi (Sailor Moon), while perhaps pure of heart, was as dumb as a bag of hammers and constantly in need of rescue by her friends and Tuxedo Mask. But Twilight Sparkle has no Tuxedo Mask to fall back on, no handsome prince to rescue her! So Twi' and her pals will just have to conquer evil themselves! A girl-positive, smart-positive "Sailor Twilight" would be a grand thing to see and I would fully support a series that took that direction. Faust's simple idea of "girls doing interesting, adventurous things" is something that everyone, girl and boy, could find entertaining and inspiring.
Two cautions:
1. If EG becomes reality, I will write fanfics for it, just for sheer delight. Perhaps now is the time for Sabre Marionette P or Ah! My Little Goddess!
2. RK_Striker_JK_5 will likely go mad trying to integrate Equestria Girls with The Elements of Harmony and the Savior of Worlds. Lovecraftian gibbering is expected. It will be delicious.
If we get a magical girl series out of this that would be fine with me.
My thoughts exactly, sir. Well--I'm not committing myself to writing fanfic for it, and I'm not optimistic about this development generally, but I definitely echo the sentiment that the one way to get me instantly on board with this would be to (not use the character designs in that "leaked" art, and) have it be an actual magical girl show. Because America is overdue for one considering that Sailor Moon was pretty big here during the childhoods of people who are getting into the creative industry now.
Also Usagi is terrible yes. Crying-based superpower my ass... *grumble grumble*
Obviously the Tuxedo Mask of this secnario is Celestia, who is also their principal, introducing an edgy element of forbidden love to the storyAll depends on what this is. If it DOES have some interesting elements, alright, however, if it simply turns out to be another generic Teen high School crapfest, let it crash and burn.
Just... Just as long as it's awesome.
And uses the same VAs.
And doesn't change anything that doesn't need to be changed.
And doesn't fuck up the characters I love.
I don't really care about the new show, to be honest. It's an idea found in an obscure magazine, and a spin-off when all's said and done. Even if it was confirmed, I'm only watching it if I hear good reports about it. Otherwise, I've still got the main show's Season 4 on my mind.
Damn, and here I was hoping the spin-off show would be about the CMC, or Daring Do.
If nothing else, it could be a way to let fans have their cake and eat it too. There are tons of fanfics where humans and ponies interact, but a lot of people (myself included) feel that having a portal to Earth open up in FiM wouldn't really feel right for the show. The preview I saw of EG (looked like a magazine scan) seems to imply that the show would be about the Mane 6 being sent to Earth in human form, so we've got our show with humanized ponies, and still have FiM around and unaffected by the new series, aside from perhaps a crossover movie.
And I guarantee you that RK tries to integrate it into either Saviour of Worlds or United We Stand. He might even be able to maintain his sanity if he goes with United We Stand instead, it is a TCB story.
Or I could just, you know, ignore it.
