    The editing process

So I mentioned a long time ago that a long time ago someone wanted to know 'how I edit.' Now that I'm back into editing again for someone who writes pony, and I do bats' non-pony stuff I actually remember how I edit shit and turn it into gold.

    ...I'm so sorry

Sometimes I feel the need to apologize for adding the stories to the twidash group. And if you have been in the group for any length of time you know exactly what I'm talking about. This most recent one more so. I'm fairly certain of either one of two things. The story approvers are blind or they have a vendetta against TwiDash. I add them for completions sake. I promise.

    Something clever and whitty

So I decided to try my hand at writing. If you can even call it writing. Write a paragraph...scrap it. Write 2 paragraphs...scrap them. Go back to the previous paragraph....scrap it for the latter 2, scrap both for starting the story at an entirely different spot. To make it even more tedious my inner editor kicks in and I spend 30 minutes reading about the different uses of em dashes in the

    Something useful for a change

I know I've been away from here for quite awhile, and I'm sure none all of you are concerned. Well basically I've left the fandom. I've just become disinterested with it. It happens, whatever.... The reason for me reaching out to people here is a concern that I feel interests many here.

    Illiteracy.

Ramblin' Time · 2:56am Jan 10th, 2013

So I figured I'd do another blog post for the reasons of (1) I'm bored and out of twidash to read (2) procrastinating looking over bats' next chapter before it goes up tomorrow and (3) I like to pretend people generally care about what's on my mind. A quick warning that this is more than likely gong to jump from topic to topic.

Hmm, where to start. I have a lot of things rattling around in my head so I'll just type and see what comes up first. I think writers do this sometimes to get get of their writers block...or so I've been told. Wonder if that that works or not.

Speaking of writers (guess it does haha), so bats and myself correspond quiet frequently over skype. Usually don't talk about anything specific, random things that manly men talk about...as manly as ponies can get anyway. Which is usually just linking each other to twidash pics/fics we recommend, many times ones we don't recommend. But some of the stories I've found are so bad it's like, you CAN'T stop reading it. One comes to mind about Twi and RD going to space....it was weird. Getting back on track, I had brought up my "credentials" (for lack of a better word) of being an editor. I don't have a job that entails writing, I've only had one English class at the college level, and I'm not even a writer myself. As you can guess it was one of those self-inflicted shoves of a cliff into that dark abyss of emo-ism.

Fortunately, bats has one of those conscience things and kept me from turning all the lights off, lighting some candles and crying in the corner of my room (Disclaimer: I don't own candles). According to bats, the only reason I'm not a writer is because obviously I haven't written anything, and that my editing proved that I could be a decent writer. He was probably just being nice but whatever, my work speaks for itself in the stories you read that I have metaphorically touched. Except Peroth, because honestly she's like a goddess in self correction and she writes everything in notepad...NOTEPAD. So the past few weeks I've been throwing story ideas at bats, and some of them I know would be instant features (yes I'm tooting my own damn horn). Will I actually write these stories?...Maybe? Unfortunately there's that whole fear of rejection, fear I won't finish it, fear it won't be good enough, fear my story will be so bad someone will track my IP and come kill me...not so much the latter but you get the gist.

Will I share these ideas? No. But whatever, I think I actually have an idea that has a concrete plot other than TWIDASH, because that's mainly what I read....If you hadn't noticed from what stories I edit. Celestia forbid my writers decide to write something else with another shipping, because I won't know what to fuckin' do, lol. I know why I like twidash, but I'll save that for a more depressing poor me blog post.

Speaking of twidash, there's a twidash contest coming up if you don't already know. I saw the post for it over on DA, and noticed it was getting like no attention. So I figured why not direct it to where people who love twidash go. I'll be honest, my motives were pretty selfish, 'Get more twidash for me to read', but can ya blame me? Speaking of which, if you've read this far and you're entering said contest I'm gonna be one of the judges to tear your fics apart, and I figure you deserve a consolation prize. That prize is....knowing I'm one of the judges. Unfortunately, for my poor authors that I do edit for, I'm unable to edit your stories for said contest, cause you know...that'd be pretty messed up.

Why is knowing I'll be a judge important? To find out what da fuck I like obviously, and what I don't like. *Cough* I hate Fluttershy*Cough*

Speaking of what ponies I like. I usually say Rainbow Dash is best pony, followed closely by Twilight, but thinking on it I think Scootaloo might be my favorite. I know what you're thinking, "That orange chicken?" But Scootaloo hits close to home for me, at least in fandom and head-canon. Despite being surrounded by friends, she's pretty much all alone. No one to look up to or to guide her, but I digress.

I think that's it. Oh, I got a new avatar courtesy of darkho. Pretty much the same GirDash, but now she's cuddling a Twi doll, which makes me "Hnng." Oh and his other work isn't bad either based on Growing Pains.

One last note, I found this gem while writing this (damn you ADD) http://www.fimfiction.net/blog/108049/how-to-recruit-people-to-a-ship Blog post by the guy that brought you Best Young Flyer which is probably the best ScootaDash shipping out there. Any person that is or plans to write shipping should read that blog, it's quite informative.

Well my faithful 4...err 3(one them is apparently banned cause they're a douchebad troll...idk) that's it...for now.

Ech out

I meant what I said, I'm not very good at the whole 'saying nice things just to make people feel better' thing.

Now man-up, cupcake. Don't wanna have to get sharp with you. I know some cutting barbs. I might have to take a stab at using them if you make me. Now back to writing slash fics; don't think I've quite bled the Twidash genre dry. Get my point?

:scootangel:

What's wrong with writing in Notepad? That's how I do everything!
Also, people who use editors are pussies, for as soon as another person edits the text and/or language, it is simply no longer the author's work.

Yes, admittedly, I do use OpenOffice for a quick spellcheck, but that's mostly for when I accidentally spell stuff the American wrong way again. Also, if you've used OpenOffice, you'll know that its British dictionary is... funny.

On that note, I suppose that I can supply some more TwiDash... which you've already all read, haven't you. If you really want to, I suppose there's nothing that can go wrong with additional editing. Hit me up, bro. Okay, enough of horn tooting.

I am an experienced writer and I can only tell you: Fuckin' do it. Nobody will hold it against you if it's bad, which I don't expect to happen given this text sample. If anything, they'll help you get even better an author.
Seriously. Jot down a oneshot and post it. It can literally only end well. People will remember you for good stories, but not for bad ones.

Do it!

That just sounds like starving artist syndrome to me. Just because someone looks over what you wrote to make sure it's spelled and flows well doesn't mean they didn't write it. Every book gets looked at and edited, doesn't mean the author didn't write it. And just using spellcheck never catches everything.

I always giggle when people dis on the "American" spelling of things. Most of those spellings actually originate from Britian

We'll see on the writing. I've had a few ideas bouncing around in my head.....we'll see,

962377 Yes, and I don't mean to belittle your work. But there are works out there that get fame (the same amount as I get, albeit a tad more) for traits which come only from that they are so heavily edited before release, until everything is optimised and the basic idea is the only thing remaining in its original form, if at all.

To me, that is not writing. Products should be released with as little delay as possible, with the only improvements made being the author's own. Is it justified to praise someone for perfect grammar if 5 editors spent a week on the piece before it was released?

Also; Do it, it's fun, no one will remember you if you get cold feet and back out, society has a common ADHD like that.

All I'll say is that stories shouldn't be praised for perfect grammar or spelling. It should be expected. If someone won't take the time to make sure their story is free of errors and that it flows properly, why should I take the time to wade through that crap for them. And if that means they receive the aid of someone they trust to look over the story, who cares? When I see "Edited by random name" it lets me know the writer actually cared about the story enough.

I'm almost certain most if not all artists worth their salt be it writer, painter, singer, or whatever, has someone they go to with something they've made and asks them "Does this suck or not?"
