    I Am Back

Hey everyone. I'm sorry for being so quiet these past few days, but Internet connections were pretty crappy at both the hotel and at the convention, so I figured I'd just save the big response for when I finally got home and unpacked.

    My First Convention

I'd been meaning to put this up earlier, but well, better late than never.

Tomorrow and through Sunday, I'll be out of town - my dad and I are going to a convention over in Beckley. Dad's going to be vending a table there to try and sell some books.

    Thoughts on Harakiri (1962)

Wow. This was a masterclass in buildup and tension. I knew about Masaki Kobayashi's movie before - a scathing indictment of the samurai and the honor code that they profess to live by - but all the same, watching the movie had me hooked from start to finish. :scootangel:

    Thoughts on Galaxy Quest

Finally getting around to writing up my thoughts on this one. I had heard plenty of good things about it from my parents, though I had yet to see it. Finally, we rung in the new year by watching "Galaxy Quest" with dinner.

I watched Godzilla x Kong yesterday · 5:15pm April 10th

And all in all?

It was fun. Good mindless monster mash of a film. Funny how much some of the stuff with Kong in the movie made me think, just a little, of Primal. If only for the lack of dialogue and the importance of character through action and expression.

I have to say, while he was only onscreen for a very short while, all told, I did really like the Skar King as a villain. He was just vicious, with a sadistic streak that almost matches King Ghidorah. You watch his scenes and find yourself eagerly waiting for Kong and Godzilla to punish him.

It was also funny to me to think how the Monsterverse really builds up to Kong becoming, well, King Kong. On Skull Island he was "king" by virtue of protecting the Iwi. In "Godzilla versus Kong" he finds his axe and claims a throne, but that ancient home is long dead; Kong's "kingship" is a technicality more than anything deeper.

Then in this film, he stands up to, and then overthrows a tyrant. liberating an enslaved race of other great apes, becoming a king by merit of deed rather than lineage. Just, interesting to say the least.

"The New Empire" won't be my favorite of the Monsterverse by a long shot, but it was still an enjoyable way to kill two hours. And for that I am glad to have seen it. My first big-screen viewing of 2024, as a matter of fact!

Glad you had fun.

This. Oh and fun fact? Adam Wingard said his next film if this does well? WILL BE ABOUT GODZILLA HIMSELF!

This movie was a blast. Apparently some people were mad about Godzilla's new design, but, eh. I think that if you have enough free time to whine about how a fictional giant nuclear lizard got a redesign you don't like, things can't be that bad.

Personally, I hope we get a movie about a certain Titan... 🦋

Yeah, I definitely enjoyed myself with this. It's not at all deep by any means, but as monster mayhem goes, it knew what it wanted to do. :pinkiehappy:

Oh really? Huh, cool. Hope that pays off then! (You know it'll have been ten years now since the start of the Monsterverse? How time flies! :pinkiegasp: )

Very nicely said, all around. Couldn't agree more.

Honestly, I'd be A-OK for that too. :ajsmug:

I need to see this movie. Hopefully, next week.

Here's hoping, eh? I think it'd be a good way to kill some time and just enjoy some good monster fun.

Fingers crossed you get the chance, my friend. ^_^

THAT IS WILD.

I really feel like Godzilla Vs. Kong was a major turning point in the Monsterverse in terms of not being afraid to go wild with the vivid imagery, and I do mean via the Hollow Earth segment with Kong. Previously, it was extraordinary monsters in an ordinary human world, and while that has its strengths (Godzilla 2014 hits it best whenever its theme of "humanity is helpless before these forces of nature" vibe becomes prominent), there's just something really exciting about a whole new realm with its own physical and ecological rules.

So while I do miss that all-too-brief time when it felt like it was going to be "Bryan Cranston's Rage Against the Godz(illa)", I'm glad they're embracing more the wild fantasy side of Kaiju and especially the Godzilla mythos (one reason why I loved the re-imagining of Ghidorah).

It was also funny to me to think how the Monsterverse really builds up to Kong becoming, well, King Kong.

I'm just imagining a fan-made supercut now of Kong's scenes from Kong: Skull Island all the way to the present Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Like some kind of Kaiju coming-of-age story!

Honestly, I very much agree. That first time seeing the Hollow Earth in GvK was just WILD. :pinkiehappy: It really did feel like (no pun intended) entering a whole new world in terms of how the Monsterverse would operate from here on out.

I've known some people who bemoan the shift towards more all-out fantasy, but honestly I've been thrilled with it. I loved seeing how wholly the Monsterverse committed to it from KOTM on out (and good on you mentioning their Ghidorah, I'd honestly him my favorite iteration of the golden dragon ever XD).

If someone actually made that supercut, I would watch the heck out of it. :yay:
