Chapters ready to go so far... · 7:28pm February 14th
As of this morning there are 12 chapters ready to go.
This morning something strange happened to my computer which had me in a borderline panic. It loads properly, I log in, I get the GUI ... and boom, I'm looking at a whited out window that I can't get out of. M$ help was no help, but it did eventually clear after restarting several times. And yes, an update got pushed to my machine last night.
I'm suspicious that it was a M$ Edge issue given that I deliberately disable it to keep it from running in the background, it's entirely possible they were trying to force me to use their browser. Which also means their AI program would be scrubbing my machine for intellectual property. When they are so desperate to force something on consumers it's not for free. I wholeheartedly believe that they aren't just limiting themselves to invading people's privacy and are helping themselves to everything they find on people's computers.
The tech agent said that they'd get back to me but never did. The thing is, they pushed so much data into my computer last night it crashed my machine. This thing is ancient! It can't handle massive data dumps. Not while I've a dozen tabs opened on my browser, running two videos at once, and a word program.
"I'm going to see if I can't load up as much material as I can just in case I get locked out... again.
Forced updates are the worst.
I dunno if it's an option, but changing your internet connection to be labelled as "metered connection" can allegedly help with updates as well.
its why the first thing I do is use Sysinternals Process Explorer to suspend all windows update processes, stopped any auto-updates, only need it active if im using the gamepass app

I've now 14 chapters loaded. Which was everything I've written to date. At least if I lose my computer I'm not losing everything.
I tried suspending updates and had Edge pushed to my computer anyway. That thing is worse than a virus.
I have to use edge if I want a decent twitch viewing. The only reason I don't use one of my many programs to kill it every time it tries to start. You might have to go into the registry to stop updates. That is an entire can of worms if you don't know what u are doing. I did that to cortanna and windows figured that out and buried her deeper then made it the only way to use the internal file explorer, so now u are forced. The only reason I don't run Linux is the games I play.

I had dual-booted a laptop with Windows and Linux. The laptop had a built-in hardware flaw that caused it to overheat if I used anything other than Windows.

to disable auto update (not suspend temp), to disable the Windows Update Service in the services app, it will break the microsoft store and gamepass for pc though
there is a registry key you can modify to disable usoclient.exe (the windows 10 auto update thing) just make sure you save to notepad which key you change so you can fix if you need to use windows update
I found out this stuff via googling and using Process Explorer to see which registry key is controlling which svchost service thing.
one thing is to get a third party program that prevents certain executables from even launching, I used it before but I forgot what it was called when I got my newer computer
windows update uses usoclient.exe to force stealth updates

Get a Linux live disk. It'll be able to set up a dual boot machine regardless of what's there. If the disk works, it'll work.
