Overview.
Changelings are insect pony hybrids that consume love for energy and to keep themselves healthy.
An adult changeling does not require love to survive as they can sustain themselves on an omnivorous diet alone however without love they will be weak and unable to preform magic or conceive offspring.
Before maturity, larva changelings will die without enough love.
A lack of love will result in holes and other problems, it will also effect a Queen faster than a standard drone and may result in aging for the typically ageless queens.
A drone’s normal lifespan will be hindered only in the absence of a queen or, in rare cases, a lover who can substitute for a Queens presence.
Hivemind.
Changelings have a limited hive mind for identification and communication though more information is needed.
Reproduction.
A Female Royal (Queen/Princess) can produce drones asexually or sexually but can normally (the odds of it happening are astronomically low) only birth a royal sexually via material from outside her own hive. Virgin Female Drones may evolve into princesses on their own, if enough love is available.
Female drones can give birth to a single offspring at a time either in the form of a changeling egg the next day or as the species they mate with if they retain their internal transformation from conception until birth of said offspring. If the female removes her internal transformation while pregnant the non changeling offspring will be lost.
Male royals (king/prince) are very rare and will almost always produce royal changeling offspring and in even rarer cases hybrids.
Male drones will always produce offspring of the female partner.
Disguise.
A changelings disguise is complex as it can range from a simple surface level illusion to a full transition on the surface for longer term camouflage, even changes down to their core organs. Most changelings rely only on a surface disguise as more love energy is required relative to complexity.
Emotions.
Changelings as emotivortes can consume any emotion however only positive emotions provide them with healing energy. Love is the most potent and addicting yet general good vibes are enough in large amounts.
Sharing love only removes the addictive properties which turn them insane and burns the love faster and faster. Changelings can not create love energy on their own.
They can consume emotions passively or actively but consuming activity will harm the host if the emotions are not directly associated with the feeder. Ie if a pony loves the changeling that changeling could feed off them without detrimental effects.
Other emotions can provide energy however they will corrupt the feeder and poison them over time. Hate is the strongest source of the negative emotions but it burns quicker and stronger than love and will shorten the lifespans of all but the strongest changelings, eventually leading to a quick death unless double the amount of positive emotional energy is consumed to heal them.
Lust is a unique emotion for Changelings. It provides absolutely no ‘nutritional’ value however can induce a blissful state similar to love and in high enough concentrations will induce a sexual bliss coma. It is useful during breeding sessions and has been know to even induce premature eustres in non changeling creatures when expelled as a paste or mixed with food/drink. It is said Chrysalis’s mind control is the only spell powered by lust.
Known Hives.
The two known hives are the Badlands have ruled by Queen Chrysalis and the budding (Ch.34) Canterlot hive ruled by Princess Imago who refuses to be called a Queen.

Really hope Chrysalis is the oldest/first changling queenHuh, would a pregnant changeling in disguise still have an egg, but the egg remains inside? Since the baby cannot be either(both) egg or no egg, especially if the adult changeling changes in the time before hatching. If so, a changeling would lay eggs, but it can hold its egg without laying it right up until it hatches?

Truethfully I'm kinda find it cliche that negative emotions are poisonous.
Personally I'd have it that negative emotions are on base stronger then positive but are significantly harder to control. So if a novice tries using them they spells/ability go out of control.
Thou a somewhat addictive property can be a good add.

Maybe poison isn’t the right word but I’m going for a (it makes them burn hotter and shorter) kinda definition so they get more power for killing their lifespan unless they heal up with even more positive emotions later.

Was chrysalis actually from badland? I feel like the everfree a better place for them. At least for those who pray on ponies.
Also will you use the comic origin for changling in some fashion?
P.s. what about lust? It technically not negative emotions but it ain't positive ether.
Definitely see some 'forbidden/restricted' spells changling have based on negative emotions. Using them gives a heavy mental toll but somewhat sercumvents the life span poisoning.
Anger for a berserker buff.
Sorrow for a debilitating curse.
