I write too much too little for no reason. Now I'm off to hyperfixate on detailing that bush.

Happy Third Anniversary, The Stereotypical Necromancer!

It's been three whole years since I started writing! Woohoo! All that time wasted thinking about ponies! :pinkiehappy:

    Jinx, where ya been?

Hiya! How's tricks? Are you doing well?

Sorry I've not been around or writing much for, like, a month. I put out a side story a 'lil while ago, but it's honestly not my best work. You can go read it if you haven't, but I can do better—and I should've done better. It's just that writing has been... a tenuous activity for me for awhile now.

Next chapter's done! (In the editing phase)

What it says on the tin!

Just thought I'd give a 'lil heads up, since I'm anticipating total completion of the chapter in the next few days. Three, tops. i've said stuff like that before. hedge your bets, 'cause it might take four

A freaky dream, and the continuation of The Stereotypical Necromancer!

So, I'm guessing there's one of those two things you're probably more interested in, yeah?

Well, too bad! I'm talking about the dream I had last night, first! :rainbowwild:

Checkin' in! Also, a small snip of my notes! · 11:32pm Sep 8th, 2023

Hiya! How's tricks? Keeping well? Sitting comfortably?

...I'll assume you're doing okay, since this is an evidently parasocial conversation between me and a completely fictional second party with which I share no apparent relationship.read: you

Anyways, it's been a minute since we've spoken, and I'm still working on my notes! I'm chuggin' along, doing as much as I can as often as I can- which, honestly, isn't as frequent as I'd otherwise like. It's really hard, though! This is the definitiveprobably revision of a 20k+ word document, through which I hope to further extrapolate an even more comprehensive system involving a huge number of facets! I have to remain impossibly concerted! :fluttershbad:

And that's before I've started working on the worldbuilding. :ajbemused:

So, I just wanted to poke my head in and say hi, and- on a complete whim- throw some mumbo-jumbo in your face to tide you over. It's a tiny snippet of my ongoing notes on the systems of magic, which- I hope- will remain true as I continue further. Pretty sure this won't get revised, and so, I don't mind showing it to you!

...Okay, I do mind a little since it kind of breaks immersion and anticipation, but I figure the people who read my blogs deserve a peek behind the curtains. Otherwise, I want this information conveyed through in-universe elements, so consider yourselves lucky! This is an amuse-bouche for the things to come! Treat this with reverence!

So... I love you! Platonically! Thank you for... everything! Something else mushy! Bye!

Thanks for the update.

It's like you're writing an in universe technical document, which is impressive in its own way. It's clear you've put a lot of thought into this, so I'm looking forward to more.

I'll assume there is no reason why there is a limit of 100. In fact, I think I'll base this idea off of decibels.

There are a few ways decibels can be represented, but one that I have learnt is that every 10 dB does increase linearly. It is 10 times of the previous value.

In this case, 100 CRAS is 10 to the power of 10. Which equates to 10 billion... COMs... Thaums?

This would easily put alicorns on the reasonable scale rather than being near the 100s. If they can output like... 300 something, our sun is about 10^30-ish kilos, that pony could move it like it weighs nothing.

Or how ever light or heavy their sun is or how it translate to mass per... thuams, CRAS, or COMs.

I also learn that 3 dB could also means 10 times. So... might need to look deeper into frequency if you want to base it off of that.

Well, that certainly is an interesting interpretation! One that... I don't fully comprehend on account of my maligned mathematical ability, but otherwise, fairly comprehensive in its own way!

...Though it's not very relevant. Oh, I just hate saying that, but you kinda incorporated a few misunderstandings, there. :twilightsheepish:

I... okay, how about this? Just because I like you, Screw, I'll clarify a few points to ensure you don't have any strange ideas left over from this foray. Just a little more magical exposition, because you're one of my favorites! That's all! No more than this!

So, from a cursory glance over a wikipedia page, I can see why you would go with decibels, but in this case, it's not very applicable. As it is, the waveform known as mana is completely inscrutable. It lies outside of conventional physics, cannot be measured through conventional metrics, and so has been appropriated with a wholly unique set of denominations in line with its otherwise unique method of study. because i am not a physicist

That is what a thaum is. A thaum is the Equine-standard unit of measurement that is used to quantify one (1) unit of applied mana. The calculation most widely used in Chaff's Revised Arcanic Scale, or CRAS, which itself is an in-universe scientific method for calculating the potency of mana in an individual's fount, can be expressed as follows: 10 times (x / y), where x is the quantity of seconds it takes for an individual to completely deplete the amount of mana in the fount at the standardized rate- ten thaums per second- and y is the quantity of seconds it takes for the fount to fully replenish its store of mana.

It's an absurdly simple calculation, I know- I suck at math!- but, for what it's worth, I actually performed every relevant calculation to a scientifically reasonable extent and plotted out a graph using over 400 data points, all of which resulted in a spreadsheet of numbers that is surprisingly compliant with its purpose. And, for what even less it may be worth, the scale ceases relevancy at numbers exceeding one hundred because, at that point, either the results vary too wildly for mathematical certainty or the equation itself loses compliance.

Because the CRAS is only expressed with the depletion rate of ten thaums, it's relatively easy for a particularly extraordinary individual to channel that small amount to such an indefinite extent that it would be far simpler to just use a different calculation. Chaff's Revised Arcanic Scale is really only meant for the general populace, anyway. It's not a wunderkind quantifier. :twilightsheepish:

So, to clarify with less verbosity: a thaum is a single unit of mana measurement; the CRAS is an abbreviation referring to Chaff's Revised Arcanic Scale, which is a mathematical statistic aggregator; and, as a last note, the COMS is the abbreviated name of an in-universe institution of magical study. Oh, and, just to make sure, the fount is where mana is stored in the body. It seems as though you inferred that, but I just wanted to clarify! For certainty!

Actually, I just looked, and both the Council of Organized Magical Study as well as Chaff's scale were both referenced in the Agent's Rest intermission! Turns out, I covered my ass pretty well this time! :rainbowlaugh:

So... I hope this clears up some seeming points of confusion that you expressed! If not, then I hope it was at least a little interesting! You can ask more questions if you somehow feel the need, but my lips are sealed from this point onward! Probably!

Gotta love some good world building stuff.

So... I love you! Platonically! Thank you for... everything! Something else mushy! Bye!

Good to see Light himself is writing the sign-offs.

I cannot in good conscience deny that, on occasion, Light has edged frighteningly close to the line of becoming an SI. :rainbowlaugh:

Well, maybe at the start, anyway. At this point, after so long of him being such an integrated part of my life, it's more like I am his SI into the real world. :twilightsheepish:

Anyway, you're totally right. Light and I are kind of nauseatingly cloying when it comes to reticence and attachment- two things which, conceptually, are diametrically opposed. Maybe that's why they blend so well?

Hm. The encroaching sense of illness that is creeping over me may be eschewing my message to the spectrum of the profoundly meaningless. Oh well! I always like seeing you, Witchery.

5745974
That last part was definitely not from Light.

And it's not a self-insert if you become the character instead of the character becoming you! :raritywink:
