Curse of Strahd Dilemma; Keep Death House or skip it and move on? (Updated) · 9:24am Dec 18th, 2022

G'day all,
Now I know there are only a handful of readers for this fic but I need your help for some decision making. At the moment, I am stuck in the Death House arc in more ways than one and to be perfectly honest, as of what I am writing right now I am not only not having fun with it, I am actually distressed about.

Let me explain;
First off, I hated Death House. It was not a fun experience, even in the campaign. It was a slog to go through, it felt pointless other than flavour text, and too be honest, it felt longer than it should have taken.
Secondly, as I am writing this arc, I realised this will take an enormous chunk out of what I thought would have been a fun story to tell, most probably taking up five to eight chapters at most just to go through the slog fest of my least favourite dungeon of CoS. Delaying me from the fun stuff I planned to write.
Lastly, most of the themes and scenes I have planned for this arc actually distressed me due to how much it attacks some of my valued virtues. It is one thing to play around it or press on about it and in normal circumstances, I would have been more than happy to apply it into the story. However, as I mentioned from my previous reasons, it honestly felt like it was not worth the effort.

However, here's the dilemma; I have a whole arc of character development, equipment additions, character level ups, world expansion, and more from this arc alone. I could compress the entire situation of what kind of world they just found themselves in just by being in Death House, which unfortunately takes away a lot of story beats that will follow once I introduce the Main Six plus Spike to the titular villain himself.

So here are the choices that I could pick on where to go from here:

  1. I could continue the Death House arc, but it will slow down the story going from here. As well as slower updates due to other projects taking priorities for my sanity's sake.
  2. I could skip this arc altogether and continue onwards to where I want it to go, ignoring all the potential loot, experience, lore dump, character development and more. However, this will encourage me to update this fic more frequently.
  3. I could time skip them entering Death House and separate what happened while they were there from the main story to its own story (much like a spinoff story of sorts). Problem would be that I know it would be too much of a hassle to read a spinoff just to know what happened when it could have been part of the main story, as well as a lot of out of context issues might arise for those who won't bother reading the Death House Spinoff.
  4. (Added) After a suggestion from my sister, I could push back the Death House arc to a later date and come back to it after certain planned scenes with other characters and story beats. (Particularly, meeting Ismark's sister, Irena)

Quite the dilemma that I hope you guys can give a hand with. Your support, vote and suggestions will help a lot. Thanks.
