He really does sound annoying. I haven't watched season 9 yet (Netflix only has the first five seasons), but I really do think the ending seems somewhat satisfying. The only thing I kind of disapprove is adult Spike's design. It just seems off to me.
Personally, my favorite MLP seasons and episodes where those with a more "small-scale" plot. Just the Mane Six dealing with happenings in their daily lives.
