She appeared as if from nowhere, a dark shadowed figure full of dread magic. Shining Armor and Cadance scowled with apprehension, but her attention was on the _other_ shadowy overlord that stood before her. Only one could remain.

Wait, isn’t Umbra in a relationship with someone else right now? I thought she had started another one.

Umbra and that changeling she loved, broke up in a earlier chapter.
And I learn to steer away whenever she has that look.
Okay, interesting to know they have those, though they seem more soft and fine than a cat's whiskers, I imagine (haven't touched horse whiskers yet, so I really don't know for sure). It would be interesting to know whether or not ponies in MLP would trim them for beauty reasons. Rarity for sure... Cadance, though? Kinda hard to imagine her with whiskers, to be honest. I'm torn between calling it cute and thinking of it like the equivalent of human facial hair. *shrug*

Cadance doesn't have a moustache or a beard, but she does have the fine hairs that horses literally feel through.
11484899
That's not what I meant by facial hair.
11484913
Hm? Whiskers are a facial hair. Being a pony, she has a lot of facial hair. She has hair all over! All praise the fluff!
Whiskers are a special kind of hair. They are not beards or moustaches. Cadance keeps herself quite neatly groomed, but still has facial hair. She can't help that, being a pony. Going naked-faced would be quite a strange look for other ponies.

Beautiful chapter and one hell of a step to commit.
Sad that no Bugwaifu will join them...

Now you're just making fun of me.
11484945
I am certainly not trying to. I'm speaking of blunt science facts about horsies, whom are deserving of adoration and wonder.
11484983
Yeah, well... intelligent cartoony horsies might want to trim their whiskers for beauty reasons, that's all I'm sayin'. Might make 'em look unkempt, otherwise. And the sensory input is kinda negligible in this case since they theoretically don't need that anymore. Unless they are sloppy eaters and constantly bump into stuff in the dark (is that part of the horse having whiskers reason or am I confusing that with cats?).
As I said, I don't know whether to think it might look cute or remind me more of human facial hair (the barely visible kind you only feel when you're looking for it... dunno what it's called).

Thinking on it, perhaps those whiskers are the origins of pony facial hair we see on some stallions?
11485094
Real horses have whiskers.
Some horses have a beard and/or moustache too.

I am aware. My mother used to raise horses when I was a little kid and there are plenty of horses here in Wyoming, both domesticated and wild. Admittedly I did have to google some closeup images to refresh my memory before replying the first time. I simply had the thought "Maybe that's where pony beards come from?"
11484921
I believe such a furstyle should be called "going vulture" or some derivative the way we say one is "going commando".
So Midnight and Anik are going to be step-siblings of Flurry? That's another conversation that will have to happen at some point. I'm sure Midnight will be a wonderful older sister teaching Flurry how to properly instill fear in the hearts of her enemies.
11485111
Considering the show isn't very realistic and the closest we come to how their fur looks like is G5's animation, I think the 'origin' for beards might be that or just 'silly cartoon pony logic'. I'd say both.
11485006
The whiskers are there because horses have bad forward vision, so they feel things out with nudges and boops and smell and licks.
11489315
Ah, well... I guess I wasn't too far off with the cat comparison, then. If only for the 'not bump into stuff' part.
So... if that means they have whiskers 'cause of bad forward vision, MLP ponies shouldn't have that problem (unless we're going for a more realistic horsie-look). Maybe a left over from evolution, then?
11489375
It would likely be an evolutionary holdover. Like why humans get wisdom teeth.
*snort* Then how come I can try new foods in my dream. I remember trying hay and it was very salty.

Better example, how can I know what it feels like to fall for hours, when the longest fall I've had was a couple feet.
