"I'm sure dad. I have Pegasus eyes remember? 20/5 in both eyes.
20/5?
"Nah. This thing was green, and much longer than a seal." Tide answered, equally quiet.
How does he know it’s green?
The Leviathan.
Of the many ancient beasts that swam our seas, none were as fearsome as the Leviathan. This ancient monster of the deep roamed our seas over a thousand years ago, and feared nothing. An adult was big enough to bite whales in half. It was reported then to be a blue/green color, allegedly, it had six legs, with the front and middle pairs webbed and clawed, similar to a seals, However the third is speculated to be vestigial; Used for mating, like ancient whales. However, no deceased specimen has ever been recovered, so all we have is sailors reports, and speculation. Sailors from all over the known world at the time often reported that the beasts would glow an iridescent green at night. Some have reported that they heard what would sound like a whale, only much more musical. Ancient whalers would report seeing a bright flash of green light, before a whale would rise to the surface, dead. Almost immediately after, the carcass of the deceased whale would be dragged back down by something massive.
Wait, the description of a leviathan varies, so which one is this?
"I want to go back out there. I want to see if I can find it again." The young colt convicted. "I'll understand if you say no, but-"
"Whats the average price for a rental SCUBA rig?" Redwood interrupted. "If your right, I'll double your allowance, I won't make you pay for the rental; And maybe, just maybe, your mother won't kill us. So what's the plan? What do we know?"
Can I have that father, please?
"I-i-t's s-s-t-t-i-ll h-h-here..." Tide shivered. Just as Tide shivered those words, a splash sounded from behind them, and a noticeable weight was suddenly on the back of the boat. Both ponies then turned to face whatever had jumped onto their boat. Two eyes, glowing in the moonlight met their gaze.
Ok, I know it just saved them, but at that moment my entire life would have flashed before my eyes.
10516010 It's in the author's notes. Even why I chose the beast I did in the prior chapter. Biblically, In the old testament, the Leviathan is described as a huge aquatic dragon, but I am taking creative liberties. The smaller the second number(20/x), the better the eye sight.
The day went on with no further excitement, other than the two ponies discreetly renting a small boat for later that night, under the guise of 'night fishing'. Dinner as well also past without incident. Just as soon as the meals were finished, Redwood said he was going to take Tide Pool out for some night fishing.
And no matter how clear the water, or how bright the moon, the light will not illuminate the seas. A night dive is basically jumping in a pitch black pool.
Not strictly true. The question is whether the light has a surface to refract off of. You can often get light enough to navigate by as deep as 20M, with clear water and a full moon. Certainly not a blue hole, but one of my favourite things to do on a shallow night dive is chill without a light. It’s an interesting perspective in a thriving reef.
10516710 I'll admit I've never dived a reef. I know the California kelp forests and whatnot. Used to dive for abalone all the time before I moved away and it became illegal.
Wonder how they communicate? Is it through their songs, or through some sort of telepathy Based on the description they don't seem to be able to talk like ponies.
To be honest, I'm not surprised an entire species was genocide from the face of the world, my guess is that Celestia and Luna were pressured by the nobility at the time or something stupid/selfish for somepony else's own gains. Politically speaking, if creatures that can bite a whale in half, are thinking creatures, and are mistaken as whales, may have ruined a industry that was at its height at the time (the whaling industry), and I doubt a lot of ponies were in support to protect the Leviathans, especially creatures that were very seclusive from other creatures.
If this was modern Equestria, my guess the Leviathans could had been protected and certain areas would become off-limits... but due to the time, what sort of industry Equestria was and other factors, the only solution was to kill them all or risk a total economical collapse... pretty much the quick-and-easy route or the long-and-hard route had to be picked. Though my question is what thoughts were going through both princesses heads, did they had any opinions about the Leviathans, did they condone or approved the execution of their kind simply to keep the whaling industry for a few more centuries until the times changed? Did they personally knew the Leviathans in some way, or were ignorant and only followed what's best for their ponies?
Anyway, awesome way to start a story, will continue to read and see how this will go in the future!
You sir have thoroughly captured my interest. I can’t wait to see what else you might have in store.
20/5?

Oh, because when the leviathan was being described I tried my best to remember which one it was. Also, I did not know that.
Passed.
I'm hooked.

All I'm going to say is, you're half right on the communication.
So Celestia and Luna genocided a species why?
