This is going to be interesting
reminds me of the monster from the film Sweetheart
Is the green flash meant to be some sort of blast that instantly kills when it hits?
Breached?

A breach is when a whale "jumps" out of the water.
You sir have thoroughly captured my interest. I can’t wait to see what else you might have in store.
20/5?
How does he know it’s green?
Wait, the description of a leviathan varies, so which one is this?
Can I have that father, please?
Ok, I know it just saved them, but at that moment my entire life would have flashed before my eyes.
10516010
It's in the author's notes. Even why I chose the beast I did in the prior chapter. Biblically, In the old testament, the Leviathan is described as a huge aquatic dragon, but I am taking creative liberties. The smaller the second number(20/x), the better the eye sight.
10516041
Oh, because when the leviathan was being described I tried my best to remember which one it was. Also, I did not know that.
Passed.
I'm hooked.
And no matter how clear the water, or how bright the moon, the light will not illuminate the seas. A night dive is basically jumping in a pitch black pool.
Not strictly true. The question is whether the light has a surface to refract off of. You can often get light enough to navigate by as deep as 20M, with clear water and a full moon. Certainly not a blue hole, but one of my favourite things to do on a shallow night dive is chill without a light. It’s an interesting perspective in a thriving reef.
10516710
I'll admit I've never dived a reef. I know the California kelp forests and whatnot. Used to dive for abalone all the time before I moved away and it became illegal.
Wonder how they communicate?
Is it through their songs, or through some sort of telepathy
Based on the description they don't seem to be able to talk like ponies.
10517936
All I'm going to say is, you're half right on the communication.
First thing that came to my mind was the Sea Emperor Leviathan.
Idk y tho
This is getting good.
This is a pretty great fic! Can't wait for the next chapter!
What does he mean by that?
How does he know it’s a he?
It’s fins have teeth?
What is it?
Did he tell them where the Leviathan was?
10525617
How would you describe the world around you while not knowing what it was or how it worked? Think about it. Thick, glowing yellow, and warm/hot.
As per the Male bit... voice tones can tell a lot. Even sex.
Ever look at a seal's fins? They're clawed.
10525627
What does that have to do with it?
I know, but since I’m reading it, I can’t here the tone of voice.
I did not know that.
I got chapter three written up, but I'm not sure how well it'll be received. Anyone interested in being a pre-reader?
10525875
I wouldn't mind doing some pre-reading, got little else to do these days
Oh no, I don’t know about tide, but who ever did that would not have no mercy.
He didn’t go far enough.
I would have gave him a high and a low five.
Yes it is.
He had no choice.
No he didn’t.
I mean, she’s not entirely wrong, but that’s because of plot armor.
He should not need to do that.
She might throw another party.
Is the main villain Squirk?
Makes me think of Orchid.

Who’s he talking about?
He’s both, right?
Who’s the elder hippogriff?
Oh, I thought he was second guessing his life choices at first.
Imagine a child doing that to you.
Now she believes him?
Pull a celestia and send her a** to the moon.
What was the question?
What is conventional beliefs? And how are those examples?
Who was that?
Been along time since I last saw a Terramar story... You have my interest.
Why is there a quotation mark around professor?
Why?
Is he a student at the friendship school.
How big is the leviathan?
Why are they shocked, wasn’t that the plan?
Why not use its tail?
What’s with the twisting?
He has a brother?
They can sense more than love?
Is it big enough?
Can he not swim?
Who the f*ck is that?
She’s the smaller one?
He’s on a beach chair?
I prefer shellfish over fish.
Specifically, I love Mud Crab and Moreton Bay Bug.
10560491
Agreed. Abalone is itself, a shellfish. We'd fillet the meat, tenderize it, then dip it in egg and milk, bread crumbs and crushed macadamia nuts. Then fry it in a skillet. Oh my god, melt in your mouth tender.
Edit: The shells are also glorious for jewelry, lawn deco, etc. The beautiful rainbow sheen the underside of the shells is... well... beautiful.
10560500
You eat Bug by boiling it, splitting it in half lengthways and add just a bit of garlic butter sauce and you eat it straight out of the shell with a fork.
I've been reading it so far. And yet I dont know how he looks like
When were the other times?
Oh no, I know where this is going.
I feel like this is gonna go bad.
A vestigial?
Anyone that can use lightning is automatically overpowered. Also, what red animal?
Do what?
So, what does that mean?
Was the word used in one of the chapters?
10562656
It means that Levi's blood probably got into Tide's system when the impalement occurred.
It's also, likely, the natural variant of the synthetic ingredient for the Healing Potion.
10562899
So, is his fast healing factor temporary?
10563009
Depends on a number of factors.
Where it entered his body, how much got in, will his pony body reject it after he's finished healing, etc.
Too many variables.
For all we know, Tide may turn into a Pony-Leviathan hybrid, because of some magic or another. Magic throws every reasonable scientific conclusion into high speed fan and sees what sticks to the walls.
10563038
Because I remember an episode of teen titans go, where beast boy replaced all the blood the other titans lost with his own and gave them the power to transform into animals, but it was temporary, and made them act like the animals they first turned into.
10563038
also keep in mind tide is an earth pony. this also may be a factor too.
That is deep man, how many doritos with cheese did you eat?
10566202
I hate doritos.
10566208
don't worry I'll send you a doctor.
i.imgur.com/kiSruYn.gif
No such thing.
You want Balance, you need Chaos.
Change, Evolution, Adaptation and Advancement are all Chaos.
Without Chaos, life stagnates.
Bushfires, for example, are Chaos burning away the excess and damage, letting the ash fertilise the soil and permit new life.
10566220
Um, I wish to point out, that's a dentist, not a doctor.
10566264
chaos is life at its most fundamental and order is stagnation and death as time trudges on into the infinite.
I just read the first chapter, loved it. You do a great job describing the wonders of diving. The excitement of seeing something as great as a whale. I have a certificate myself and although I don't use it as much as I should I've experienced some fantastic moments underwater. The first chapter brought back a lot of great memories :).
Never seen anything like this mystery creature though. Curious to see where that goes.
That's an interesting stance. And I must admit, not one I necessarily agree with. You make it sound nature needs humanity to keep a balance. The problem I have with that is that humanity is a unicum. Not only are we everywhere, we change and control the environment in such a way and at such a scale that it can't be compared to any other species. Sure, there is balance in nature. Herbivores and predators, parasites and symbiotes so on and so on.
But only humanity can change an environment as extremely as changing jungle into a concrete city. Really think about how extreme an environmental change that is. Only humanity has the technique to catch fish in any environment and at such a massive scale that we can bring multiple species to the brink of extinction within a time span that is the blink of an eye, relatively speaking. We have machines that can uproot a tree and undo it from its branches in seconds. We created multiple islands made of plastic and garbage. We are changing the climate of the entire planet.
I don't think nature needs humanity. There are plenty of examples of areas where humans used to be but aren't anymore where nature is doing (relatively) fine. Plenty of ghost towns. I'm personally fascinated by Tsjernobyl. A city being overtaken by plants and animals again.
Ask yourself the question, what would happen if humanity would disappear overnight? There will be a period where there will be many disasters because of failing technology (industry/factories, nuclear reactors etc). But after that? Nature don't need us to prevent this wasting away disease. There are always predators, parasites and diseases when overpopulation becomes a problem. In the long run, I fail to see how the disappearance of us can be anything but a good thing, as far as good thing applies.
Having said all that, I'm a human and I like living. I'm not about to go on an anti-human crusade. Some of my best friends are humans. I do think it's good to realise how unique we are and how massive our influence on the planet is, though.
10566333
Precisely!
10566449
True, but we have also brought under control several diseases that had the potential to drive many species to extinction, which in turn would have thrown ecosystems out of balance.
Theoretically speaking, had humans not brought Smallpox under control, there is the very real possibility that it may have eventually mutated in such a way as to affect animals, and one can only speculate on the potential destruction that would have resulted in.
Ultimately, Humanity came to exist in nature for a reason. Evolution doesn't occur without purpose.
10566475
Yes, it does. Evolution doesn't have a 'purpose'. Its a matter of statistics, there is no goal, let alone an end-goal. If you are a creature that is better suited to perform a specific task in a specific environment at a specific time in history that might mean you have a better chance of passing the genes that make you better suited to perform that task on to your progeny. Which means those genes become more wide-spread within the community. If something happens that makes that same adaption detrimental suddenly you are less likely to pass on your genes and they might even disappear from the community. It's a random process, there is no purpose behind it. Its not as if nature at any point in time said: I want to create humans.
And what-if scenario's aren't arguments :). Cross-species transmission is a real thing, we already have helped spread many diseases all over the world. Both amongst ourselves and amongst animals. We also have played a great roll in introducing exotic species all over the world causing massive damage in populations and ecosystems. Because we travel all over the world with ships, planes and cars both with passengers and cargo (ballast water in case of ships) there are now many species in ecosystems that are not prepared for them. In my opinion, asking what would have happened if smallpox was still a thing (which is another argument, but not one I'm informed enough about to get into) and it had spread to animals is kinda moot if there are tons of similar scenarios where we introduced problems that have actually happened.
I gotta be honest, these first few chapters are kind of a disjointed mess.
One moment we're in the middle of a conversation, and then suddenly a bunch of monster hunters teleport out of nowhere.
Not only do they take this kid seriously, but they instantly manage to find the leviathan and all characters are conveniently within spotting distance when it swims up the river.
Oh, and of course our main character is the only one to actually plan ahead and anticipate where the river leads to.
I'll see where this goes for a few more chapters, but I'm finding it hard to find any redeeming qualities.
