Oh, certainly, I understand the conundrum: Tell them everything so that they can be better prepared for whatever they run into, at the risk of a panic; or keep it under the wraps to avoid that, at extra risk to the success of the mission.
I just would have chosen the first option, but then, I'm a college student, not some winged-magical-horsey in charge of an entire country. So I probably wouldn't be the best person to make that decision anyway.
