In my opinion, for a nuclear situation, I'd want a break-action rifle, something along the lines of a G2 Contender with stock or a TOZ 34. A bolt-action would be for longer-range work and not used in fallout-heavy areas, probably a K31 or a Rubin 1911. Automatics would have to be light, easy to maintain, fired from the closed bolt, and chambered in something simple like 45 ACP or 9mm Parabellum. I would pick a sidearm that was chambered to match the automatic.
However, ultimately survival would not be determined at range, because without ammunition a gun is just a club. I'd bayonet the rifle, and rely mostly on not getting into fights or using a hatchet or mace to end those I would get into quickly.
The AK-47 and AKM variants are like the toughest rifles out there, in my opinion. They are awesome. As are 1911's...god I want a 1911...
