...Hehehehehe.... Gaius will meet Fluttershy, she will stare at him... and Gaius will come to, see a bunch of rabbits, and wonder why he's filled with te̡̥͚r̖̬r̛̝̤̰͚̙̝͔i̝̣̠̬̤͇b̮l̷͇̬͚̝ẹ͜ ̨̜u͔̜̥͠n̞̭̙̜͚̥f͎̱̻̲̞a̜̹t͖̟̭̝ho̲̭̘ma̘͍̜̪̬͙͝ͅb͔͖͇̖͔̬͟l̶̳ẹ̞̫̟͢ ̻̰̰̭f̲̺͕͇̖̪̟͡e̺̝͔͈̩̤͢a̪͡r̤̺̳͚̖̰͡ͅ when he tries to catch one for stew... A society that wishes to survive on a world that is constantly trying to kill them. Most slaves (especially in that time period) were used because the people who fight cannot farm while they are away, which would lead to mass starvation without workers. Because funds are being spent primarily on military interests, there is not enough to hire more hands or purchase food from neighbors. The only solution is slavery, most of whom were captured soldiers. The wars themselves were fought because the more territory a nation rules, the more food it can acquire, the cheaper the food is, the more people can afford the food (and medicine, which would also have lower prices for the same reason), and the fewer people die of starvation, illness, and exposure.
Pretty much anything bad humans do is out of necessity. We are innately Neutral Good. We like and prefer doing good things, but we usually won't go out of our way to do so unless there is something in it for us. We will do bad if we believe it is necessary to do so.
and they are generally treated well
Rome actually had laws protecting the rights of slaves. They could (and did) even take their owners to court (and, surprisingly, win) if they were being mistreated. I think this mostly stems from the fact most Roman slaves were capture soldiers and the Romans held great respect for soldiers.
I feel as if Gaius is way out of character is he is a Centurion. To become a Centurion in the time period Gaius is from I believe he would have had to serve as a regular solider for twenty-one years. Twenty-one Pluto damned years. On top of that I am assuming he has been a Centurion for the whole five years of the war with the Germans he has been fighting. That adds up to twenty-six years in the Roman army. Gaius' personality is what I would expect to see from a fresh-faced recruit. NOT a grizzled veteran who has likely been in multiple campaigns. Centurions were face scarred stone cold leaders. If I am not mistaken there are accounts of Centurions beating their men to death as disciplinary action. Gaius just seems to be to green, innocent, and clean mouthed to be a real Centurion. The Roman Legions were a harsh and unforgiving place. A man who has what I am assuming to have twenty-six years of experience in it would be a lot less... nice.
Also, everyone seems really underwhelmed that they have discovered a new species. I mean, first contact diplomacy anyone. This is not how you handle meeting a new culture for the first time let alone a brand fucking new species. In short, reading this was painful at times.
You're actually writing him pretty well, this is funny so far.

Yeah, that too. This is a pretty interesting take for HiE.
I am most pleased with this so far.
3192342 Your humble servant only wishes to please you, your highness.
