Huh...So that's it? Flare's dead already? I want to care, but I don't. I guess that's just a microcosm of one of the problems of this story.
I have to say this story has disappointed me. Important characters are killed at the drop of a hat, thus removing any emotional weight to their deaths, and those that are left are....not sympathetic to say the least.
The only reason one would want their victory is because the Shadow or whatever its called is such a faceless antagonist.
3601897 Already? It took 28 chapters. :I

It's how you did it. It was just "lol here's Spitfire". He really didn't do anything significant beforehand, besides getting the Element, although that was mostly Vinyl's job.
3601912 Oooooh he did something significant... He did a LOT of things significant. Let's look at Flare's accomplishments:
-He helped Dr. Pie get a serum that could potentially save Equestria from the Plague
-He got Rainbow Dash to rejoin the military, which resulted in her slaying Trixie
-He retrieved an element of harmony for Equestria, aiding their struggle
-He brought Dr. Pie back to Equestria, thus advancing their medical science ten fold
-He was there for Dash in her final hours and even gave her a proper burial, (which will be far more important later)
-He inspired Torch to leave SkyVale
-He gave Twilight hope in a time where she had little
-He gave Rainbow the strength to carry on and not just end herself, which may have been Equestria's saving grace. For without her, Trixie would have done them in
Had Flare not been there, none of that would have happened. Plus later we find out about a lot of stuff that Flare did that will have lasting effects later. He may be dead, but his influence extends even after death.
Also Spitfire didn't kill him, the cloaked mare he saw in Cloudsdale killed him.
Also the darkness has simply not been given a face... Yet. And I would say that the story is meant to be a more "realistic" take on war. In real war, important people don't survive just because they are important. The good guys do not always win.

Eh, they're all practically the same anyway.
I suppose I should rewrite what I said. He was never at the FOREFRONT of anything he did (except for helping RD, Pie, and Twilight emotionally, which to be quite honest, always came out weird. Like why are they gushing all their emotions to this dude?) . I never felt he was the hero, then his death would've been more jarring. For example, He helped Dr Pie with the serum? He happened to be there, and honestly, she did most of the work slaying the baddies and getting the blood necessary.
3602014 Oh God no, they are COMPLETELY different. You'll find out in later chapters that this pony does not work for the darkness at all. In fact, there is a whole other thing going on that becomes apparent very soon.
The reason why though is because Flare is innocent so to speak. An outsider, one who will not judge them. Twilight is used to being the leader and if she shows an ounce of weakness to her subjects, they could take that as a reason to worry. She opens up to Flare because he is NOT one of her subjects, he's an outsider that has come to help. She feels safer sharing with him because he does not have a pre-disposition towards here like her citizens do.
With Dash she already explained her reason: Flare reminds her of herself in a way. He's a young kid who risked everything to be a hero and she feels responsible for that. She knows he left SkyVale because of her, and she feels a certain level of responsibility for that because he was mislead. He is the only one that doesn't take her rudeness to heart. He is understanding of her situation and he continues to try and get close to her despite her pushing him away. Eventually Dash just warms up to him because of that; he's the only one that wanted to get inside enough to keep trying.
As for Dr. Pie, her explanation could be one of many. The most likely is she's out of her mind. I mean there is a lot going on in her head that is clearly not right. It could also be that Flare sees past her behavior and to her motives and she respects that.
Ultimately though you're right in a way: Flare is NOT a hero. Yes, he was a hero to Equestria, but he's not THE hero. He's not the primary savior of Equestria, and he wasn't meant to be. However as I stated before, his actions have lasting effects.
Honestly though what "important" characters have been killed off so rapidly? AJ only appears once and in a flashback. She is a supporting character who was never given any extreme depth. Rarity was a supporting character as well, and she is more of a symbol of Dash's arrogance and failure than her own character. Spike is a symbol of Twilight's determination, which is so strong that killing her own son will not stop her, but once again: he's not given a huge back story and has little time spent on him. He only appears in two chapters even. Dash doesn't even KILL Trixie, she lets her live. The only characters thus far who have been major important ones that have been killed off are Flare and Rainbow Dash at this point. Any other characters that were killed were mostly supporting characters. I don't get what you mean by saying that important characters are killed at the drop of a hat. Unless you mean important as they are recognized characters from the series, however I would argue that their importance in the actual show is irrelevant here because in this interpretation they are not huge players.

I have enjoyed this story so far, but the fact that flare was a main character and I liked him, makes it kinda crappy that he died so easily, but I shall read on in the hopes that you shall bring this story back from the dead, and please don't take this the wrong way, your a great author, but this story has taken a turn that I don't like
3602647 Part of being an author I feel is taking chances that aren't always going to be popular. Don't think of it as Flare being gone, but instead as a chance for new characters to shine.
Also I honestly wasn't expecting this many people to like Flare. I thought people were going to find him annoying.
Flare is dead? I was kinda hoping he meet up with his sister again.
3612634 All of the weapons are gunblades. Remember? They refer to them simply as "guns" or "swords" but remember all the weapons have both a firearm and a blade attached. See the cover image for reference.
