In December I opened this topic in the accusation fic forum and here it is

I got the thought as before the two part finale of that season when the starlight hate really started to me at least, starlight was liked as a villain though with comparisons to Amon as many others including the cartoon hero Eli stone and Xaldin Wolfgang have pointed out and there is even a crossover with them meeting

Would starlight have even been a little better accepted if she had a better backstory

The ideas I listed in the topic were

If she had her own diamond tiara who looked down on those with lame cutie marks but was more openly malicious

Or how about if she had come from a family who specialised in a business but ended up disowning her when her cutie mark was nothign related to their business

The backstory really made me dislike her so having a better one might have changed my opinion. Even though I think she still would be a spotlight stealer

She doesn't need a backstory! That's what fanfics are for.
What matters is her her role going forward.
If anything, having a backstory is what made the inconsitancy of the character to begin with, since a backstory where she's bad contradicts her being good now and a backstory where she's good contradicts her being bad in Cutie Map.

Nomatter what you do she's still two completely different characters, then and now. No amount of backstory is gonna change that.

Her backstory was handled terribly a lack of one may have been better imo, but a better one may have helped things slightly. To make her a better character, you'd also need to stop making her a huge screw-up that gets forgiven instantly in one episode and then is the hero that was right all along in the next. Starlight gets pushed by someone higher up heavily. she's shoved in the audience's faces and they're told to love her. That needs to stop.

I think it would actually have been worse, to be honest. If she had a better backstory, but was handled the same way after that, it would be a swift and sudden fall from grace, and it would have been just as disappointing as the backstory we actually got. Having a good backstory, but a lousy character from that point on? It's almost worse, in retrospect.

Of course, had she not been put on a pedestal and made into this glorious, flawless paragon of "friendship", it might have been salvageable.

A better back story would have made the villen of starlight tiny bit better but not her current character. I hate her backstory because it was lazy and by the end of it she caused her own misery and the writers want you to feel bad for her. I have no pity for someone like that.
