Correcting the Critics #2: "Save MLP"

It's been a while since I did my last part in the series. But recently, I saw something that encouraged this installment. A tweet pointing out what someone said 10 months prior. On November 25th 2022, Fluttercheer made a blog post on this site about Save MLP and sent a message about how supporters of that

ChatGPT came up with AU fanfic ideas

I'd say that the title of this blog post says it all, but I'd be lying. I'm not the type who would rely on ChatGPT. But I would certainly consider it once in a while and would most definitely recommend it, especially if you have writer's block.

Some of these ideas I may use sometime. Or anyone reading this blog can use them for their own inspiration.

Correcting the Critics #1: "Why Couldn't MLP been more epic?"

I've chosen to begin a new blog series where I look at the claims of trolls, haters, and ignorant people and pick apart their claims. I can't promise how regular or frequent this series will be. But I wanted to make a proper series with a straight-to-the-point name. In this series, I will also avoid actually posting any links or saying names. I don't want to give the people or groups any

Mykan: the Antithesis to Change (and Synonymous to Hypocrisy) · 4:57am Oct 27th, 2022

A while back, I said I was done with Mykan. I'm ashamed to say that I'm going to break my own rule. But I'm not gonna get into another flame war with him. But he did just post a blog that if I addressed the entire thing, it would be far too long. So I'm only addressing a few key points that stuck out to me.

If I don't change to your liking, you and your peeps STILL mock, flame, and insult me and my actual fans (Usually for the thrill of it) Now is that fair or right?

This is why I wanted to address this blog post. I count this as self-defense.

Simply put, is it fair or right for him to accuse his critics of being critics "usually for the thrill of it"? And yes, they are critics. I'll grant that sometimes they do still mock, flame, and insult him now and then. But they don't do it "usually for the thrill of it", they do it as critics first and foremost. I never hated Mykan for any thrill.

Besides, Mykan will mock, flame, and insult his critics. Why is it okay for him to be a jerk to his critics, but it's not okay for his critics to respond in kind?

That's what Fanfiction is basically for (Self-Serving). We don't like how the characters are, or what they did in Canon, so we use Fan Fiction to alter it to our own liking. (Whether or not the people will like it is a complete Gamble)

I write fanfiction to bash and punish the characters for doing things in Canon I do not approve of, or to fix relationships and things I didn't like seeing. I write for my own satisfaction and revenge. I'm not here to learn to be a better writer for some career.

That's not in any way what fanfiction is for. What fanfiction is for is functionally no different than what official content is for. The only functional difference between an original story and fanfiction is who made the source material. Yes, whether or not someone likes a fanfic is a gamble, but the same applies to an original story.

What Mykan does however is what's considered revenge porn. And assuming Mykan reads this, I'd like to clarify that the term "revenge porn" doesn't literally refer to pornographic material, but is functionally writing hateful stories for revenge for no other reason than self-satisfaction. Mykan gave the definition himself. I'm just using the proper terminology that the definition applies to for clarification.

The next few points will go more into detail about his hypocrisy.

and the "Don't like, Don't read" excuse is QUITE legit.

I didn't MAKE you read the story. Just because I posted it, I didn't make you click on the mouse and read it. (You did that on your own accord) You didn't HAVE to read it all (You just WANTED to) you didn't HAVE to make rude comments or demands of changing the story.

The "Don't like, Don't read" excuse is only legit when the person using it isn't a hypocrite.

Nobody made Mykan watch MLP. Nobody make him click on the mouse to watch the videos (he did that on his own accord). He didn't have to watch it all (he just wanted to). He didn't have to make rude comments about the show.

The moment Mykan refused not to watch MLP was the moment his "don't like, don't read" excuse lost any legitimacy.

-You don't like what I've written? That's YOUR problem, not mine. (I'm not here to cater to YOUR specific needs)

If he doesn't like criticism, that's his problem, not ours. (We're not here to cater to his specific wants.)

-But DO NOT barge into MY area, and demand I make MY stuff the way YOU want it. (That's being a control-freak bully, not a helpful critic) There's no rule or law that says I HAVE to comply with my audiences demands.

This site is not Mykan's area. This website is a public forum, so posting on this site means that anything he posts here is subject to public scrutiny. I'll grant that we can't demand Mykan to change anything. But that goes both ways. Mykan can't demand that we not criticize him. But keep in mind that if Mykan ever goes too far with anything, the moderators of this site actually can demand things from Mykan. It could just be a rumor, but I have heard that Mykan negatively represents his critics in some of his stories. That had better just be a rumor for Mykan's sake, because if it's true, then couldn't that be considered a violation of the TOS? But it is just a rumor to me. And because of this, I can't verify it, nor am I making accusations. Although I'm sure Mykan will claim I am making accusations.

Yes people can write whatever they want when it comes to fanfiction but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good writing.

That doesn't necessarily make it BAD either.

This is perhaps the most hypocritical comment Mykan has made. Mykan is infamous for being against the idea of there being a third option. So I'm going to hold Mykan up to his own standards with this, because he's done the same to me before.

Writing whatever you want is either good writing, or it's bad writing. THERE IS NO MIDDLE OPTION.

The irony is that Mykan is right. Nothing about writing whatever you want is inherently good or bad. It's all about the content itself. But since when has Mykan ever accepted "It Depends" as an option?

It's all a matter of your own preferences. But just because It's good/bad for you, doesn't mean it's good/bad for everyone.

There is no IN GENERAL when it comes to this stuff. It's only a matter of the viewers personal opinion, and ONE PERSON does not equal One-billion.

Actually, there is a difference between personal preference and objective facts. Yes, art is subjective, but there are objective standards that can apply to whether or not it's good or bad. And the fact of the matter is that someone can not like a piece of art, but still recognize it as good. And the objective standards can be demonstrated through scientific means. Color Theory for example is a science that can demonstrate objectively what the best color combinations are. And that's just one example. If you put Van Gogh's Starry Night next to a Kindergarteners stick figure drawing, it is objectively verifiable which is the better of the two. Just because the parent may value the stick figure more doesn't change the fact that they would still recognize Starry Night as the better.

And there are objective standards to writing as well. Mykan's stories are objectively bad. But I also recognize the potential for them to be good as well. That's why other people have taken to writing Mykan's stories in their own styles. They're taking something objectively bad and making it decent. And everything that can make Mykan's stories good are also everything that Mykan hates and refuses to write. That's why anyone who writes their own versions of his stories are also doing it in spite of him. They're taking his 1-dimensional characters and adding depth and character growth and development.

...I just don't like or don't want them to happen in certain places. That's not being ignorant, that's being demanding.

So it's not okay for critics to demand things of Mykan, but it's okay for Mykan to demand things? It's Mykan being demanding that's the reason he's a target for critics.

Well said!

You might be my hero.

So it's not okay for critics to demand things of Mykan, but it's okay for Mykan to demand things? It's Mykan being demanding that's the reason he's a target for critics.

Mykan is the embodiment of the self-serving bias and the actor-observer bias. He lives in a self-fulfilling delusion. It's like people like Mykan use a template.
